Job description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education - Incumbent must be a current licensure as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Oklahoma.
Experience - One year of relevant Operating Room, PACU or ICU Required.
Licenses & Certification - Incumbent is required to possess current licensure by the State of Oklahoma or National Council of State Boards of Nursing for Registered Nurse. Must possess Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification, current competency for intravenous conscious sedation.
Knowledge & Skills -
  1. Professional knowledge of nursing care principles, TQM ethics, practices and processes required to assess nursing needs of assigned patients.
  2. Knowledge of wide variety of medical disorders, normal course of diseases, potential complications and individual therapeutic interventions.
  3. Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects and complications of their use.
  4. Ability to recognize and react to emergency situations.
  5. Knowledge and skill in operation and monitoring of general nursing equipment, e.g. infusion pumps, defibrillators, arrhythmia monitors, etc.
  6. Ability to develop, implement and evaluate a patient care plan to meet the need of assigned patients.
  7. The ability to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient and or unit conditions.
  8. The ability to act as OR Supervisor as assigned in the absence of the Director of Surgical services.
  9. Knowledge and skill of collection laboratory specimens such as wound cultures, procedure pathology, and urine.
  10. Basic knowledge of surgical hand scrub, application of sterile gloves and gown, sterile draping, sterile field, and opening of sterile supplies.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the position is to provide nursing services and support to the Muscogee Creek Nation Department of Health operating room and outpatient surgery. The Registered Nurse will consistently display behavior that enhances the image of the health care system as evidenced by professional and courteous behavior toward all customers and co-workers. The incumbent Knows and applies current nursing theory, principles of care and nursing procedures in performing the following functions appropriate to the age of the patient in the delivery of quality care and services; Circulating and/or Scrub nurse in the OR, Patient care in the Pre and Post-Operatives area, Maintains a safe and clean care environment, participates in Quality improvement, Assists in the supervision of Surgical Technicians, Actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, Behaves in a manner consistent with the Mission and objectives of the Muscogee Creek Nation Department of Health and performs other duties as requested.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a hospital setting. There is common exposure to infectious communicable diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and emotionally disturbed patients, families and visitors. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested and required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work in hospital surgical care setting requires considerable walking between workstations and patient care areas. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting of patients or similar activities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Position also requires ability to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
  1. Participates in the assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluation (review and revise) of nursing care plan. Evaluates the patient status, interventions, patient response to interventions and updates the plan of care accordingly.
  2. Completes patient care assignments as directed under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services
  3. Provides therapeutic communication in daily practice.
  4. Assists with all activities of daily living and personal care needs.
  5. Promotes a supportive OR environment and team atmosphere at all times.
  6. Observes, records, and reports signs, symptoms and responses of patient change in condition or reaction to treatments to the appropriate persons.
  7. Performs simple lab tests such as stool checks for blood and finger stick blood sugars.
  8. Obtains screening, admitting, and discharge information and documents information correctly.
  9. Prepares patients for surgical procedures, including surgical skin preparation, hair clipping as needed and surgical positioning. Completes comprehensive surgical checklist, and ensures all documentation is present in chart prior to start of procedure.
  10. Performs and supervises nursing procedures such as tube feedings, dressing changes, treatment of wounds, inserting of urinary catheters, irrigations, and applications of heat and cold therapy to extremities.
  11. Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenously). Observes for physical and emotional contraindications to the medications administered. Prepares and administers therapeutic treatments prescribed for the patient.
  12. Performs intravenous conscious sedation as directed and as indicated during the course of the treatment plan.
  13. Provides first-aid and emergency care as well as provides for resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest as well as assisting with disaster measures as needed.
  14. Educates patients and their family members regarding proper maintenance of health and the prevention of disease.
  15. Emphasizes physician's discharge instructions on self-care and procedures. Ensures that patient and/or family member understands instructions.
  16. Shares responsibility in ensuring that the hospital has adequate supplies and equipment, a safe environment is maintained, and general upkeep of the facility is done on a continual basis.
  17. Attends at least 75% of department staff meetings.
  18. Punctual attendance and timeliness is required.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.
  20. Floats to other units as needed.
