Job Description
Hirani Engineering & Land Surveying is seeking an experienced Part-Time Special Inspector - Structural Steel to support construction projects throughout the Albany Capital Region. This position is responsible for performing special inspections of structural steel construction to verify compliance with approved construction documents, project specifications, applicable building codes, and industry standards.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in structural steel inspection, construction practices, bolting systems, and steel erection procedures, along with the ability to work independently while maintaining detailed and accurate inspection documentation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform special inspections of structural steel construction in accordance with project requirements, applicable building codes, and industry standards
  • Verify structural steel member sizes, grades, identification markings, and installation against approved shop drawings and construction documents
  • Review and interpret shop drawings, erection drawings, connection details, and project specifications
  • Inspect structural steel fabrication and field installation activities, as required
  • Monitor steel erection procedures, member alignment, fit-up, and overall construction quality
  • Inspect and verify high-strength bolting installations, including:
  • Bolt type, grade, and diameter
  • Installation methods
  • Pretensioning requirements, where applicable
  • Compliance with approved procedures and specifications
  • Observe and document field modifications, repairs, and corrective actions
  • Identify non-conforming work and communicate findings to project stakeholders
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, field notes, photographic documentation, and daily logs
  • Verify corrective actions and closure of non-conformance items
  • Participate in final inspections and project closeout activities
  • Maintain professionalism while coordinating with contractors, project managers, engineers, and clients

Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience performing structural steel inspections
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel construction methods, steel erection practices, and inspection procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, erection plans, and connection details
  • Experience inspecting high-strength bolting systems and structural steel installations
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, standards, and industry practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple project assignments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector Certification
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • NICET certifications related to construction inspection
  • Experience performing inspections for public agencies, commercial developments, infrastructure, or institutional projects
  • Familiarity with New York State construction projects and regulatory requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to access active construction sites, including climbing ladders, navigating uneven terrain, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform field inspections for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment as required

Salary: $45-$50 / hour
