Job description

SFGATE Social Video Producer (Part-time)

Your Impact:

Under the direction of SFGATE's Social Video Editor, the Social Video Producer will create compelling content across all platforms, with a focus on digital video for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. In this dynamic role, the Social Video Producer will be a good storyteller, be comfortable in front of a camera, have expertise in video post-production, collaborate with different editorial departments and work under tight deadlines to deliver video in a variety of formats. This role will be covering a range of topics - from top stories of the day to spotlights on fascinating long reads.

Why SFGATE?

Launched in 1994, SFGATE.com was one of the first large-market media sites in the world and served as the exclusive digital home of the San Francisco Chronicle for 19 years. In 2019, the Chronicle (which can now be found online at the paywalled sfchronicle.com) and SFGATE officially became two separately run entities with their own editorial staffs and independent newsrooms.

Today, SFGATE is a digital-only publication that reaches more than 28 million readers every month and tells the stories of the people, places and ideas that make San Francisco, and the Bay Area at large, the weird and wonderful place that it is. We help readers navigate their day, whether it's by keeping them updated on big breaking news, guiding them to interesting local experiences or sharing a part of the Bay Area they haven't seen before.

The site is home to nine verticals: Culture, offering a unique mix of the entertainment news you actually need and the underground stories from hidden corners of the Bay Area you want; Local, the premier destination for everything that life in San Francisco encompasses (from wildly expensive real estate to schools to what it's like to live above a raucous bar); Sports, covering the intersection of sports and culture; Tech, covering the intersection of tech and culture; Travel, covering everything from flight deals and travel news to hotel hacks and under-the-radar day trips; Politics, where we keep you up to speed on all local, state and national politics that have implications on the Bay Area; Food + Drink, where we tell you the backstory of the people behind the bar and in the kitchen; Cannabis, where we cover the sprawling industry of legal weed in California, good, bad and ugly; and News. Plus, the site has full-time local editors covering both Lake Tahoe and the Central Coast, a SoCal bureau that focuses on Los Angeles food, culture and the outdoors, as well as Disneyland, a National Parks bureau with editors across the West Coast covering national parks in California, the Southwest, Big Sky Country and the Pacific Northwest, as well as a satellite editor covering Hawaii and California's North Coast.

What you'll do:

  • Understand social media trends and the news cycle, and be able to share our stories in a way that helps audiences be included in trending news moments
  • Produce and star in franchiseable news videos for SFGATE's social video platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube)
  • Acquire and package User Generated Content for use on SFGATE's social media channels
  • Edit video content promptly using Adobe Premiere and/or Adobe After Effects and be comfortable editing both short and long form video
  • Be exceptionally creative with your approach to social, and come up with new and interesting ways to share things
  • Be a good storyteller, capable of writing engaging scripts for produced video and corresponding social copy that entices viewership on social franchises
  • Post each project or video, and track video performance
  • Prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Use social analytics tools and performance metrics to identify best practices for creating video content, increasing video views and key KPIs across platforms
  • Work with urgency in breaking news environments
  • Communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse writers, editors and staff
  • Work closely with the Social Video Editor to assist with short and long-form projects when needed
  • Manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Work effectively in a medium-sized news organization with an emphasis on teamwork
  • Work legally in the United States
  • Be able to live in/commute to the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Work 20 hours per week

Who you are:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience working in social media/digital content creation
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience editing vertical and horizontal video on Adobe Premiere
  • Strong in-platform (TikTok, Instagram reels, etc) editing skills and out-of-platform (Premiere) editing skills are a must
  • Ability to work under extremely tight deadlines when required
  • Strong understanding of social media analytics, ability to track performance of social franchises
  • Demonstrable experience identifying shareable/viral content: news junkie fluent in what's trending and always plugged in to the latest conversations
  • Excellent AP-style news writing skills and on-camera delivery
  • You've read SFGATE and follow us on social media to have an understanding of our brand and voice
