Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of individuals with complex needs? EAC Network, a leading not-for-profit agency dedicated to empowering and supporting over 80,000 people through 120 impactful programs across Long Island and NYC, is seeking part-time In-House Counsel to join our Nassau and Suffolk Guardianship Programs.

  • Wage: $45-$56 per hour depending on experience
  • Location: 175 Fulton Ave, Suite 400 in Hempstead and 320 Carleton Ave in Central Islip
  • Schedule: Up to 21 hours per week - must be able to travel between Counties

What drives the core purpose of this job:

The Suffolk and Nassau In-House Counsel will support the Guardianship Program Director by providing legal services across both Suffolk and Nassau County Guardianship Programs. Responsibilities include handling legal matters such as, but not limited to, eviction proceedings, foreclosures, turnover proceedings, wills, real estate transactions, trusts, and Medicaid advocacy, based on the complexity of each case. The In-House Counsel will represent clients and the Guardianship Program in court proceedings, ensuring that all activities remain within the scope and limitations of the applicable Orders & Judgments and Article 81 proceedings in both counties. 

What are the key responsibilities:

  1. Interpret laws, rules and regulations regarding Article 81 and Guardianship proceedings. 
  1. Prepare and file contracts, briefs, motions, and other legal documents on behalf of clients. 
  2. Represent clients and the Guardianship Program in court appearances, including hearings, conferences, and related proceedings
  3. Provide legal support and guidance on program-related matters, including eviction proceedings, foreclosures, turnover proceedings, wills, real estate transactions, trusts, and Medicaid advocacy.
  4. Negotiate on behalf of clients to achieve appropriate legal and financial outcomes.
  5. In collaboration with the Program Director, track and manage all court-related deadlines, including compliance and status conferences, and ensure timely follow-up.
  6. Ensure all program activities remain in compliance with court orders, legal mandates, and Article 81 requirements.
  7. Collaborate with courts, county agencies, financial institutions, and external legal partners to support client needs and case resolution.
  8. Provide guidance, consultation, and training to program staff on legal processes and guardianship-related matters.
  9. Identify opportunities to improve legal processes, policies, and overall service delivery within the Guardianship Program.
  10. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records in accordance with agency and legal standards.
  11. Travel regularly between Suffolk and Nassau Counties to support program operations.
  12. Transport clients to and from court hearings using  own vehicle, as needed.
  13. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Program Director and EAC Network Administration.

What key knowledge, skills, and abilities are required to excel in this role:

  1. Law Degree and a member in good standing of NYS Bar Association required.  
  2. Regular travel between Suffolk and Nassau Counties is required
  3. Frequency or expectation of regular court appearances in both Suffolk and Nassau Courts. 
  4. Must be proficient in office and computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, Microsoft Office applications, calendar systems, and e-mail and/or database software skills necessary to perform job responsibilities.  
  5. Minimum of two years of relevant work experience preferred. 
  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. 
  7. Must have access to an automobile and possess valid NY State Driver’s license.
