 Staff Accountant (Christian Nonprofit – Part‑Time, Remote)

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia (CEF of VA) is a Christian ministry committed to reaching children with the Gospel. As a religious organization, CEF reserves the right to prefer employees or prospective employees based on religion.
We are seeking a detail‑oriented Part‑Time Staff Accountant to support the financial integrity and ministry operations of CEF of Virginia. This role ensures accurate financial stewardship across the state office and its chapters and reports to the State Director, and later to the Controller once hired.
Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized part-time Staff Accountant to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for completing accounting tasks such as bank and account reconciliations, transaction entry, financial report preparation and other duties as assigned. The candidate will report to the State Director, and then to a Controller once hired. This role requires the ability to work independently. A strong understanding of accounting practices and proficiency in financial software, including QuickBooks, and others.
 
Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in a central location using double entry bookkeeping methods.
  • Manage accounts payable, including tracking expenses, processing invoices, and reviewing and processing reimbursements for expense reports.
  • Prepare financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Reconcile bank statements and ensure all transactions are properly recorded.
  • Utilize financial software to streamline bookkeeping processes and enhance accuracy.
  • Record investment income & ICS transfers
  • Make transfers to and from the State Office’s and its chapters’ bank accounts
  • Calculate quarterly billing to chapters
  • Assist with payroll processing
  • File quarterly returns for any sales tax and assist with Form 990 and VA-102 filing preparation
  • Be familiar and work effectively within QuickBooks’ (including budget module) for budget preparation and reporting
  • Gather W9s and file annually
  • Other duties as assigned
 Required Qualifications
  • Alignment with CEF’s Statement of Faith and ministry mission
  • Strong accounting experience
  • High proficiency in QuickBooks or similar financial software for bookkeeping tasks
  • Ability to independently close books and produce financial statements
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting concepts
  • Excellent accuracy, organization, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work remotely with confidentiality and reliability
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • Experience with nonprofit or fund accounting
  • Experience with ICS transfers or multi‑entity accounting
  • 5 - 7 years accounting experience 
 Skills
  • Strong technical accounting skills with a solid understanding of accounting and financial concepts.
  • Proficiency in double entry bookkeeping and bank reconciliations.
  • Experience with accounts payable management.
  • Knowledge of GAAP standards and IRS compliance requirements for nonprofits.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to produce an accurate work product.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret financial data effectively.
Compensation 
Hourly Range: $30–$35 per hour, commensurate with experience and ministry alignment.
 
Work Environment
  • Remote position
  • Eastern Time Zone or adjacent time zones preferred for collaboration and timely financial reporting
