Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanic with a strong background in mechanical repairs and maintenance, especially on motors, gears, belts and automation systems. Experience with baggage handling systems is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will also have a basic understanding of electrical systems to assist in maintaining and troubleshooting BHS equipment to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the airport's baggage handling system. This role involves performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing system malfunctions, clearing jams, and ensuring that the baggage handling equipment operates at full capacity each day. The candidate will also work closely with the airport operations staff, TSA and airport maintenance dept. to minimize downtime and ensure the timely handling of luggage.
Key Responsibilities
System Maintenance & Repairs
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of the baggage handling system, including conveyors, sorting machines, motors, Motor Control Panels and other related components.
  • Identify, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues that may arise within the system.
  • Perform emergency repairs as needed to minimize system downtime.

Jam Clearance & Troubleshooting
  • Quickly respond to and clear baggage jams or blockages that may occur in the system.
  • Investigate root causes of jams and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and technical issues in real-time.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and IT system issues with support from OEM hotline.

Operational Monitoring
  • Continuously monitor the baggage handling system for performance, ensuring that all components are functioning properly.
  • Ensure that all bags are delivered to the appropriate location in a timely manner, minimizing delays.

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs performed, including parts used, hours worked, and any incidents or issues.
  • Provide daily/monthly baggage reports to the airport operations team on system performance, repairs completed, and any ongoing concerns at the monthly consortia meeting.
  • Manage and maintain accurate inventory of spare parts.

Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with other members of the airport maintenance and TSA teams to address issues and improve overall system performance.
  • Coordinate with airport operations personnel to ensure the efficient and timely handling of baggage.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other BNP Associates staff members.

Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • Comply with airport and regulatory standards, including those related to equipment operation, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Qualifications
  • A solid understanding of both mechanical and electrical systems is important since baggage handling systems often involve a combination of motors, gears, belts, and electrical control systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for both electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to quickly diagnose and repair system malfunctions under pressure.
  • Familiarity with conveyor systems and related equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and other tools related to maintenance.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED: A basic requirement, as it provides foundational knowledge needed for technical roles.
  • Completion of a relevant program in mechanical engineering, industrial maintenance, or similar fields. Specialized training in baggage handling systems, conveyor belts, and automation equipment is a significant advantage.
  • Industry-specific certifications (e.g., those related to safety standards, equipment repair, or machinery operation) is preferred.

Working Conditions
  • This is a part-time position: Saturday - Sunday, from 5 am - 1 pm, with the requirement to be on call outside of regular business hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
