About the Junior League and The Shop
The Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula (JLPA•MP) is an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. 


The Shop is a curated resale and retail thrift boutique located in downtown Menlo Park. As the flagship fundraiser for the JLPA•MP, revenue generated at The Shop directly funds local community programs, civic grants, and women’s leadership development. Our business model is uniquely collaborative, blending paid retail professionals with dedicated JLPA•MP community volunteers who help bring our mission to life.


Position Summary

The Sales Associate provides excellent customer service while supporting daily operations of The Shop. This is a flexible, supplemental-hours position ideal for someone who enjoys retail and wants to contribute to a mission-driven organization. 


Supervision

Reports directly to The Shop Manager. May receive direction from the Assistant Manager when present.


Schedule & Hours

Part-time, hourly — up to 20 hours per week.

Variable schedule including weekends and evenings as needed to support Shop operations. 

The Shop is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. 

  • Days and hours based on business volume and staffing needs
  • Days: Tuesday through Saturday as needed
  • Shifts typically between 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM; most shifts range from 4 to 7 hours


What You Will Do

Customer Service

  • Greet customers warmly and offer assistance
  • Answer questions about merchandise, pricing, and store policies
  • Process sales transactions accurately using the POS system
  • Handle returns and exchanges according to store policy
  • Answer phones professionally and take messages as needed


Sales Floor Operations

  • Maintain organized, attractive merchandise displays
  • Restock and rotate inventory as directed
  • Keep fitting rooms clean and organized
  • Assist with pricing and tagging donated items following documented procedures
  • Monitor the sales floor for customer needs and security


Cash Management

  • Operate the cash register and process various payment methods
  • Maintain an accurate cash drawer and complete daily reconciliation
  • Prepare bank deposits when assigned
  • Follow all cash handling procedures and security protocols


Inventory and Donations

  • Assist with donation intake and initial sorting
  • Help organize the stockroom and storage areas
  • Support special sales events and promotional activities


Collaboration

  • Work cooperatively with volunteers and other staff members
  • Maintain confidentiality of organizational and customer information
  • Participate in training as scheduled


What You Bring

Required

  • Minimum 1–2 years retail sales or customer service experience
  • Reliable and responsive when called for shifts
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Basic math skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and stand for extended periods
  • Comfortable working with a diverse public and volunteer team


Preferred

  • Experience with thrift, consignment, or donated goods retail
  • Point-of-sale (Square POS) system experience
  • Cash handling and daily reconciliation experience
  • Flexibility to accept shifts on short notice


Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods
  • Lift and move items up to 35 pounds regularly
  • Retail store environment; occasional exposure to dust from donated items
  • Fast-paced during peak hours; interaction with a diverse public and volunteer population
