What does a part time mechanical engineer do?

As a part-time mechanical engineer, you design and build mechanical systems that meet the requirements of a given project. You may use calculation techniques to determine the construction requirements of each device, coordinate with other engineers to design it, and use software to detail the engineering specifications. You typically support full-time engineers, particularly because companies who need new devices usually want them as soon as possible. Depending on the needs of the project, you may also travel to factories or work sites, discuss potential devices with customers, and give presentations. You often work through contracts, but you may work exclusively for an employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time mechanical engineer?

To succeed as a Part Time Mechanical Engineer, you typically need a degree in mechanical engineering, strong problem-solving skills, and experience with engineering principles. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and industry-specific certifications like EIT or PE are commonly required. Effective communication, time management, and adaptability are important soft skills for balancing multiple projects and collaborating with teams. These competencies ensure that even in a part-time capacity, engineers deliver high-quality solutions and contribute effectively to organizational goals.

How does working part time as a mechanical engineer impact project involvement and collaboration with full-time team members?

Part time mechanical engineers typically focus on specific tasks or phases of a project, which means clear communication and efficient documentation are essential for seamless collaboration. You may be assigned to design reviews, prototyping, or troubleshooting, working closely with full-time colleagues who handle broader project management. While you might not always be present for every team meeting, most companies utilize digital tools and flexible scheduling to keep part-time staff integrated and informed. This structure allows you to make meaningful contributions while balancing other commitments.

What is the difference between Part Time Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectPart Time Mechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, possibly PE licenseBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering or Design
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, product development, consultingCAD drafting, product design, prototyping
Employer UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing companiesDesign firms, R&D departments

Part Time Mechanical Engineers focus on applying engineering principles to develop and analyze mechanical systems, often working on projects requiring technical expertise. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed drawings and models for manufacturing, emphasizing CAD skills. While both roles require mechanical engineering knowledge, the engineer's role is more analytical, whereas the designer's role centers on drafting and design documentation.

How much does a part time mechanical engineer make?

Part-time mechanical engineers typically earn between $20 and $40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. Salaries can vary based on industry, certifications, and whether the role involves specialized skills or tools. Many part-time positions also offer flexible schedules and opportunities for skill development.

Job description

Job Purpose:

Navitas Semiconductor (Nasdaq: NVTS) is a next-generation power semiconductor leader driving innovation inย gallium nitride (GaN)ย andย high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC)ย technologies. Our products enable faster, more efficient power delivery acrossย AI data centers, high-performance computing, energy and grid infrastructure, and industrial electrification.

With more than 30 years of combined expertise in wide bandgap technologies, GaNFastโ„ข power ICs integrate GaN power, drive, control, sensing, and protection, delivering faster power delivery, higher system density, and greater efficiency. GeneSiCโ„ข high-voltage SiC devices leverage patented trench-assisted planar technology to provide industry-leading voltage capability, efficiency, and reliability for medium-voltage grid and infrastructure applications.ย

We are seeking a motivated junior or senior undergraduate (or graduate student) with an Electrical Engineering background and strong mechanical engineering interests to join our Supply Chain Management team in Irvine, CA. This is an ongoing part-time internship running throughout the academic school year, designed to fit around a student's class schedule. Working closely with test operations, this intern will focus on building the business tools, engineering processes, and analytical frameworks needed to support demand planning and supply readiness for our New Product Introduction (NPI) programs. This is a data- and tools-heavy role โ€” ideal for someone who enjoys translating engineering knowledge into structured business processes and decision-support systems.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Partner with test operations to perform industrial and mechanical design assessments, evaluating equipment, fixtures, and test hardware needs for current and upcoming NPI programs.
  • Develop and maintain demand planning tools and models in Excel and other business platforms to anticipate supply needs across the NPI pipeline.
  • Build and refine supply chain processes, workflows, and templates that improve visibility and predictability of material and capacity requirements.
  • Review and interpret mechanical drawings and technical documentation to assess design-to-supply chain implications and flag sourcing or lead time risks.
  • Leverage AI tools โ€” including Claude and Microsoft Copilot โ€” to automate reporting, accelerate data analysis, and enhance business process documentation.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including engineering, operations, and program management to align supply forecasts with program milestones and launch timelines.
  • Track NPI readiness metrics, identify supply chain risks, and support the development of corrective action plans to keep programs on schedule.
  • Prepare structured analysis, dashboards, and status reports to communicate supply chain health to stakeholders and leadership.

Required Qualifications

Basic

  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior undergraduate in Electrical Engineering, graduate students are also encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated interest or hands-on experience in mechanical engineering โ€” through coursework, personal projects, research, or prior internship/co-op experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data modeling, demand forecasting, or process analysis (e.g., pivot tables, scenario modeling, structured data tools).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and comfort working across productivity platforms.
  • Familiarity with AI-powered tools such as Microsoft Copilot or Claude for research, drafting, and analytical workflows.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesize technical information for cross-functional audiences.ย  ย  ย  ย  ย ย
