Job description

The Student Academic Center (SAC) provides tutoring, academic coaching and support courses for students who need a little help. Free math and writing tutoring are offered in various locations on campus to help students develop the study skills needed to succeed in the classroom. SAC is currently hiring for tutor positions.
Job Summary
The primary role of this position is to serve as a mathematics tutor, working with students in introductory-level math courses in a variety of spaces across campus, including residence halls and other satellite locations.
Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Tutors college-age students by teaching concepts and providing homework help for introductory level courses ranging from basic skills courses through the general education courses. For math tutors, these courses would include finite math (M118; D116/D117), calculus (M119 and M211), and the business math course (B110).
  • Functions as an informational resource for student visitors to the SAC residential tutoring locations, providing more general academic/institutional information upon request.
  • Mentors student visitors and other staff members, working collaboratively to create a welcoming learning experience.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
  • Currently enrolled IU student and has taken/received credit for numerous undergraduate math courses successfully (including 200- and 300-level courses, such as calculus II/III, statistics and/or linear algebra).
Preferred
  • Having taken or taught finite mathematics and/or the B110 business math course.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
  • Previous tutoring experience (paid or volunteer).
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Experience working with the public.
SKILLS
Required
  • Displays mastery of the appropriate (usually quantitative) material.
  • Possesses strong communication skills and an interest in teaching.
  • Must be patient when dealing with students and other staff members, both individually and in small groups.
  • Must be a good team player who is willing to engage in various professional development opportunities (tutor training, participation at meetings).
  • Must be a conscientious employee, observing accepted standards of professional behavior (timely attendance, recording hours).
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Additional Information
Expected to work 1-3 evenings per week.
Some daytime hours may be required for those tutors who work in various satellite locations.

$15.00 per hour
Work Hours
6-9 hours per week.
Work schedules are set at the beginning of each semester (or at the time of hire).
The employee must maintain a maximum of no more than 29 hours per week across all positions of employment held with IU.
Residential tutoring - Monday - Thursday from 7:00 PM-10:00 PM.
