The Position

Part-time position for selected students enrolled in Durham Technical Community College (DTCC), or a comparable post-secondary education institution's educational program(s), directly related to industrial maintenance. Industrial Maintenance Apprentices will be offered the opportunity to learn, under direct supervision, how to: Operate, maintain & improve industrial production systems & equipment reliability. Reduce system/equipment downtime and Support operation of assigned processes.

Report to Senior Project Manager, OFP.

Essential Functions

  • Follow all safety & environmental requirements in the performance of duties
  • Learn to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in performance of duties
  • Under direct supervision, participate in the support, development & establishment of maintenance procedures, maintenance plans & spare parts lists for processes assigned
  • Observe & learn how to perform corrective & preventative maintenance
  • Learn how to interpret mechanical & electrical specifications, drawings & other technical data sheets
  • Learn how all maintenance activities are correctly documented in SAP
  • Learn how maintenance contributes to performance improvement & reliability of process equipment
  • Learn how to use Systematic Problem Solving (SPS) tools to establish Root Cause Analysis & resolve equipment issues. Experience hands-on opportunities to work with responsible engineers & manufacturing personnel to troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Suggest practical changes or improvements to equipment & department work practices
  • Other accountabilities, as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Moves equipment &/or supplies weighing up to 33 pounds within the facility using various body positions. Routinely operates & inspects manufacturing equipment using hands. Ability to be on feet for up to a 12-hour shift. May require corrected vision to 20/25 based on role. May require color vision based on role. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder. May be required to work at elevated heights. Occasionally works around odorous &/or hazardous materials. May be required to wear latex gloves. Occasionally performs critical job functions in extremely cold work environments. Occasionally positions oneself within confined spaces for inspection, repair & maintenance of equipment. Ability to work in loud noise environments with hearing protection. Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions. Able to pass a driving exam for powered industrial trucks. Does not require a valid drivers license.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required
  • Current enrollment in an appropriate post-secondary educational program directly related to industrial maintenance required
  • Maintaining active enrollment, in good standing, in the post-secondary educational program related to industrial maintenance is a condition of participation in the Novo Nordisk Apprenticeship Program required
  • Experience in planning/organizing work, managing execution, checking results & revising work plans a plus
  • Basic computer literacy, including the ability to work with MS Office applications like Word & Excel required
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude & demonstrated skill in the use of small hand & power tools, mechanical equipment & materials applicable to industrial maintenance & pharmaceutical production preferred
  • Demonstrates a systematic approach to problem solving & troubleshooting required
