What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Machinist Instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Machinist Instructor, you need extensive machining experience, knowledge of manufacturing processes, and typically a relevant technical degree or journeyman certification. Familiarity with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and industry safety standards is essential, along with teaching certifications in some cases. Strong communication, patience, and mentoring abilities set successful instructors apart in engaging and supporting students. These skills ensure effective instruction, student skill development, and safety in hands-on learning environments.

What are part time machinist instructors?

Part time machinist instructors are professionals who teach students the principles and practical skills required for machining, such as operating lathes, mills, and other machine tools, on a part-time basis. They typically work in technical colleges, vocational schools, or community colleges, providing hands-on training and classroom instruction in machining techniques, safety procedures, and blueprint reading. These instructors often have industry experience and may continue working in the machining field while teaching part-time. Their primary goal is to prepare students for entry-level machinist positions or to enhance the skills of working machinists.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time machinist instructors, and how can they be effectively managed?

Part-time machinist instructors often balance teaching responsibilities with other professional or personal commitments, which can make time management a key challenge. Additionally, they may need to adapt quickly to different student learning speeds and skill levels within limited instructional hours. Effective communication, staying organized, and leveraging collaborative resources with full-time faculty can help manage these challenges. Many instructors also find success by preparing detailed lesson plans and utilizing online learning platforms to supplement in-person instruction.

Job description

Muskegon Community College, an associate degree-granting institution of higher education, is a center for lifelong learning which provides a person the opportunity to attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs. We are seeking qualified candidates for Adjunct Instructors.

The Adjunct Instructor Pools are for applicants who are interested in teaching in the future as an (part-time) adjunct instructor for one of our departments. The Instructor Pools are always open for applications. However, this does not mean that we have an immediate opening in the division.  The Adjunct Instructor Pools function as a way for department chairs to view applicant materials in advance of a need, and determine if the applicant will be approved or not approved to be added to their pool of eligible applicants. Should a part-time instructional need arise in a given department, the department chair will look first at the approved applicants to see if anyone matches our needs, in which case they may make contact to schedule an interview
