GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position under the supervision of the library director performs a variety of public service duties to support daily library functions, including communications with customers, provides customer service, basic computer skills and basic library duties.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Require regular attendance, timeliness and be prepared to perform assigned duties and schedule.
  • Perform daily operations including circulation duties and public interaction.
  • Assist customers in navigating library materials, services and computers.
  • Retrieve, check in, organize, and shelve materials returned by patrons.
  • Communicate with customers, employees and other individuals to answer questions, disseminate or explain information and address complaints.
  • Execute daily opening and closing operations.
  • Instruct patrons on use of all available resources.
  • Compile library data and statistics as required.
  • Operate office equipment such as computers, phone systems, copiers, scanners, and fax machines with high degree of competency.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES


May include, but not limited to:

  • Create and present programs and displays.
  • Advise customers in selecting preferred library materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the department.
  • Cross train peers.
  • Schedule, train and oversee volunteers.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma.

Library experience preferred.


EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Requires strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Requires attention to detail and organization and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Able to learn new technology and have a basic understanding of current technological trends and trouble shooting.
  • Operate computers, hardware, software and office equipment
  • Articulate proficiently in written and oral communication with the ability to speak, read and write in English.
  • Requires knowledge of basic arithmetic including adding, subtracting, multiplication, division and fractions. Must be able to choose the right mathematical method or formula to solve a problem.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Stand or sit for extended periods of time.

Walk, bend, stoop, reach, kneel, grasp items, push/pull carts, crawl, sit on floor, climb using stairs, ladders, step stools.

Touch, hear, feel, see and read within a high and low range.

Ability to diffuse hostile, loud or aggressive members of the public.

Tolerate odorous people and materials including molds, allergens and other possibly offensive objects or insects.

Clean public restroom: plunging toilets, removing fecal matter and vomit.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Travel for occasional work at other library locations.

Must have reliable transportation to run errands and travel on library business.

Requires respectful attire and appropriate footwear to be worn daily
