LIBRARIAN I - 8030
GRADE - 110
PAY RANGE - $26.24/hr - (20 hours)
Monday to Saturday including nights, will have a rotation schedule.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Provides public library services at a library location; performs directly related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide readers advisory, informational, technology and program services through a library location. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of a Librarian III but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Supervision may be exercised over the work of those employees in the title of Library Technician, Library Page, Administrative Assistant I, Volunteers and Interns as assigned. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, other employees in the same class, other library employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class include interpreting library systems and procedures to customers, and are performed in a public service or general office environment.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:
- Determines patron needs and provides guidance, information, technological assistance, readers advisory, and related library services;
- Maintains knowledge of informational services within the library and provides research and reference services to patrons on a wide variety of subjects and educational levels;
- Explores all possible information sources for inquiring patrons, including all materials within the library system of Manchester, contributing Libraries in the inter-library loan program, and other related sources as necessary;
- Maintains a safe and secure library environment by monitoring patron adherence to library procedures and guidelines and maintaining an awareness of all persons within the facility;
- Plans, prepares, and directs or conducts youth and adult programs, such as technology classes and online searching skills as assigned;
- Reviews and makes recommendations for the materials collection at assigned locations and on weeding and ordering;
- Ensures library equipment is in working order, including performing routine maintenance;
- Supervises subordinate positions at the assigned location;
- Ensures that patron service problems are resolved in a courteous and timely manner, interpreting library policy as necessary;
- Operates and maintains various audio-visual and technology equipment;
- Serves as a liaison between the community and the library system on a daily basis, developing positive relationships by bringing library materials and presenting programs at various community sites;
- May perform the duties of other classes as necessary to provide timely and effective service to patrons;
- Provides bibliographic access to all materials by inputting library holdings into the local online catalog;
- Maintains technology skills and assists with technology questions;
- Ensures the accuracy and integrity of the local online database.
- Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
- Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
- Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
- Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
- Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
- Performs additional duties as required by the classification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of library location or department services systems and procedures;

- Thorough knowledge of library public service functions, procedures, policies and organization;

- Ability to provide courteous customer service in an environment that may at times be stressful;

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters Degree in Library Science, Computer Science, Public Relations Degree, or related; and
- Three to five years of library experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- None.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
- Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form;
- Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to access relevant library materials and operate a keyboard;
- Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to turn, reach and grasp repetitively;
- Sufficient strength and endurance, with or without reasonable accommodation to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects, through a full range of motion, up to 50 pounds occasionally, 30 pounds frequently and 20 pounds consistently;
- Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to monitor area operations, and to attend library system, community, and public meetings at various locations.
