Library Clerk

The Jewish Library of Baltimore, a program of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore is seeking a part-time Library Clerk.ย 

The part-time Library Clerk serves as the first point of contact for patrons of the Jewish Library of Baltimore (JLB) and provides support in delivering library services to the community. As the JLB is a dual-language library with materials in both English and Hebrew, applicants shouldย possessย sufficient familiarity with the Hebrew language toย assistย patrons inย locatingย and using library materials. Candidates should also have knowledge of Jewish history, culture, traditions, holidays, and religious practices sufficient to help patronsย identifyย and access relevant resources. The position requires an understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System, including the ability to organize, shelve, and retrieve materials accurately, as well as experience using online library catalogs and databases to search for materials andย assistย patrons with their information needs. Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills are essential.ย 

This is a part-time position; 15 hours per weekย in person.ย Sunday 10:00am-3:00pm,ย Tuesday 3:00pm-8:00pmย and Friday 10:00am-3:00pm.ย 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Staffย the circulation desk, creating and managing patron library accounts, assuming responsibility for telephone and email correspondence with library patrons; as well as registering patrons for library programs.
  • Knowledge of Dewey. Identifyย andย locateย appropriate informationย and materials and instruct patrons on the use of Library resources. Maintain the physical collection of books and resourcesย byย shelving, shelf-readingย and keeping the collectionย in good order.
  • Navigate cataloging system, Follettย Destiny. Enterย new resourcesย into the online catalog, edit existing online records to be up to date, andย extract data from online records.
  • Work with Library Manager and librarians on correspondence and notices. Keep track of statistics while at the circulation desk; walk-ins, check-outsย and holdings.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and use of common label templates.
  • Communicate predetermined library policies and procedures to library users.ย 
  • Project a positive attitude about the Libraryย when interacting with patrons.

Skills and Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 1- 3 yearsโ€™ work experienceย in a library.
  • Needs to beย familiar withย Hebrewย language.
  • Must have knowledge of Jewish history, culture, holidays, traditions, and religious practices sufficient to help patronsย locateย and understand library resources.
  • Understanding ofย the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System,ย including the ability to organize, shelve, and retrieve library materials accurately.
  • Experience using online library catalogs (OPACs) and libraryย databases to search for materials,ย assistย patrons with research, and manage circulation-related tasks.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented, proactive, and solution-focused.
  • Ability to maintainย confidentiality.
  • Must be committed to the mission of The Associated.ย 

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $20/hour for 15 hours a week;ย commensurateย with experience.
