What is a part-time legal job?

Part-time legal jobs are positions within the legal field that require employees to work fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. These roles can include positions such as paralegals, legal assistants, junior lawyers, or administrative staff in law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. Part-time legal jobs offer flexibility for those balancing other commitments, such as education or family, while still providing valuable experience in the legal sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time legal assistant?

To thrive as a Part-Time Legal Assistant, you generally need a foundational understanding of legal terminology, document preparation, and office administration, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and document management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications help ensure efficient legal support, minimize errors, and contribute to the smooth functioning of legal teams.

How does working in a part-time legal role typically impact opportunities for professional development and career advancement?

In a part-time legal position, you may encounter fewer formal training programs or mentoring opportunities compared to full-time roles, but many firms still encourage skill development through project-based work and continuing legal education. Part-time legal professionals often work closely with senior attorneys, gaining exposure to a variety of cases, which can broaden your experience and network. While advancement to partnership or senior roles may be less common on a part-time schedule, consistent high performance and flexibility can lead to growth opportunities, especially in firms that value work-life balance. It's important to communicate your career goals with your employer to identify pathways for progression.

Job Summary

AmeriLife is seeking 2 Paralegal / Legal Operations Interns to support the Legal Department with contract operations, contract data management, and related legal operations projects. This is an entry-level opportunity designed for law students, college students, or students enrolled in a paralegal program who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in a corporate legal department. Interns will be trained on contract structure, internal contracting systems, and legal department workflows, and will play a key role in coding, organizing, and analyzing contract data. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, organized, curious, and comfortable working with confidential business and legal information.

Job Description

Job Duties

  • Code, organize, and analyze contract data in AmeriLife's internal contracting systems.
  • Review contracts to identify key information such as parties, contract type, effective dates, renewal terms, termination rights, obligations, and other important data points.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate and complete contract records, including updating trackers, databases, and system fields.
  • Support contract intake, routing, tracking, and follow-up to help keep legal and business workflows moving efficiently.
  • Identify missing information, inconsistent data, or potential issues and escalate questions appropriately.
  • Prepare summaries, reports, or data quality checks to support legal operations and contract management projects.
  • Assist attorneys, paralegals, and legal operations team members with administrative and project-based support as needed.

Qualifications

This role is open to entry-level candidates, including law students, college students, and students enrolled in a paralegal program. Prior legal experience is not required, but attention to detail, reliability, and a willingness to learn are essential.

Required Qualifications

  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, especially when reviewing documents and entering data.
  • Ability to stay organized, manage deadlines, and follow documented processes carefully.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort working independently while also collaborating with attorneys, paralegals, legal operations team members, and business partners.
  • Ability to review information, compare sources, identify inconsistencies, and ask thoughtful questions.
  • Comfort handling confidential and time-sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Professional, dependable, and curious, with a strong interest in learning how a corporate legal department operates.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a law school, undergraduate program, or paralegal certificate/program.
  • Prior internship, part-time office, administrative, legal, compliance, or business operations experience.
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Interest in contracts, legal operations, data quality, compliance, or business process improvement.

What You'll Learn

Interns will receive training and support from the Legal Department and will learn how contracts are structured, how corporate legal teams support business operations, how internal contracting systems work, and how accurate contract data can help identify obligations, risks, deadlines, and business insights. We provide onboarding, documented processes, and clear guidance so interns can build confidence and contribute meaningfully over time.
