What is a part-time legal job?

Part-time legal jobs are positions within the legal field that require employees to work fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. These roles can include positions such as paralegals, legal assistants, junior lawyers, or administrative staff in law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. Part-time legal jobs offer flexibility for those balancing other commitments, such as education or family, while still providing valuable experience in the legal sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time legal assistant?

To thrive as a Part-Time Legal Assistant, you generally need a foundational understanding of legal terminology, document preparation, and office administration, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and document management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications help ensure efficient legal support, minimize errors, and contribute to the smooth functioning of legal teams.

How does working in a part-time legal role typically impact opportunities for professional development and career advancement?

In a part-time legal position, you may encounter fewer formal training programs or mentoring opportunities compared to full-time roles, but many firms still encourage skill development through project-based work and continuing legal education. Part-time legal professionals often work closely with senior attorneys, gaining exposure to a variety of cases, which can broaden your experience and network. While advancement to partnership or senior roles may be less common on a part-time schedule, consistent high performance and flexibility can lead to growth opportunities, especially in firms that value work-life balance. It's important to communicate your career goals with your employer to identify pathways for progression.

Job description

Location: Boston, MA - On-site (Downtown Boston)
Type: Part-time, 20-25 hours per week
Team: Legal
Compensation: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
About Flexcar
Flexcar is reimagining how people get behind the wheel. Instead of a multi-year lease or a loan, our members subscribe to a car month-to-month - with insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance included, and the flexibility to swap vehicles or cancel when life changes. We are headquartered in Boston and growing fast across the country.
About the Role
We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented part-time legal intern to join our Legal team. This is a hands-on role with real substance: you will support contract management, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day legal operations, working directly with internal stakeholders and outside counsel. If you want meaningful legal work rather than administrative overflow, this is that role.
What You'll Do
  • Conduct legal research and draft memorandums regarding legal conclusions
  • Manage and respond to company inquiries and complaints submitted to various Attorney General's Offices, the Better Business Bureau and other similar channels
  • Monitor and triage the legal inbox, responding to and escalating matters as appropriate
  • Montior, triage and respond to legal concerns identified by field, operations, marketing, customer care, etc.
  • Support the review and management of legal documents, including contracts, agreements, and company policies
  • Maintain and organize legal files, databases, and document management systems to ensure easy access and compliance with recordkeeping requirements
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, internal teams, and external stakeholders to track and complete legal projects on time
  • Provide support for dispute resolution and litigation matters
  • Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and industry developments, sharing key updates with the Legal team
What Drives Success in This Role
  • Experience drafting and reviewing legal documents
  • Strong attention to detail in proofreading and document consistency - grammar, structure, and accuracy
  • Comfort supporting standard corporate agreements, including NDAs, marketing agreements, and independent contractor agreements
  • A collaborative mindset - you're able to partner with legal and cross-functional teams on special projects and initiatives
  • Sound judgment about what to handle independently and what to escalate
Who You Are
  • Currently enrolled as a JD candidate (2L or 3L)
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication abilities with a keen eye for detail
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work on-site in downtown Boston for 20-25 hours per week
Nice to Have
  • Experience with contract management systems and corporate governance processes
  • Prior in-house or law firm experience
Why Join Us
You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our Legal team on matters that reach the whole business, with direct visibility into how an in-house legal function operates at a growing consumer company. We're flexible about scheduling around your class and exam calendar.
How to Apply
Submit your resume to [email protected]. A brief cover note telling us what draws you to in-house legal work is welcome but not required.
