What is a part-time LCSW?

Part-time LCSWs, or Licensed Clinical Social Workers, are mental health professionals who work less than full-time hours, typically providing therapy, counseling, and support services to individuals, families, or groups. They are licensed to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues, often working in healthcare settings, private practices, schools, or community organizations. Working part-time allows LCSWs flexibility in their schedules while still fulfilling licensure requirements and making a meaningful impact in their clients’ lives.

What does a part-time LCSW do?

A part-time licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) works fewer than 35 hours per week to provide mental health services on a case by case basis. Your responsibilities are to meet with each client to provide a mental health assessment, offer support to the client through counseling and connection to community resources, and design an ongoing treatment plan for the client to improve their mental health. Your duties may also include contacting emergency services if you believe a client needs further help, working with health insurance companies to develop mental health services, and cooperating with social services and court cases when necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time LCSW, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), you need a master's degree in social work, state licensure, and experience in clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), telehealth platforms, and standardized assessment tools is often required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and strong boundaries are vital soft skills for building trust and supporting clients effectively. These competencies ensure ethical, effective care and maximize client outcomes while meeting professional standards within a flexible work schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time LCSWs and how can they be managed?

Part-time Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) often face challenges such as balancing a limited schedule with client needs, managing caseloads efficiently, and ensuring continuity of care. Communication with supervisors and colleagues is crucial to coordinate client coverage and maintain high-quality services. Setting clear boundaries for availability and maintaining thorough documentation can help address these challenges, allowing part-time LCSWs to provide effective support while managing their workload.

Part-Time Independent Contractor Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Garfield Counseling Center, Inc. (GCC)

Chicago, IL 60624  |  Part-Time, 1099 Independent Contractor  |  Behavioral Health / Substance Use Treatment

About Us

Garfield Counseling Center, Inc. (GCC) is a SAMHSA-certified, CARF 3-Year Accredited Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) providing comprehensive behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment services to the Chicago community. As a nonprofit organization licensed under the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS/DBHR), GCC is committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to individuals and families affected by substance use and mental health challenges.

We are growing our multidisciplinary clinical team and are seeking a dedicated Part-Time Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to join us.

Position Summary

The Part-Time LCSW will provide individual, group, and/or family therapy to clients receiving substance use and behavioral health treatment. This role is engaged as a 1099 independent contractor, with the potential to transition to a full-time position based on program growth, client volume, and mutual fit. This role involves conducting clinical assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary care team including counselors, medical providers, and case managers to support client recovery and overall wellness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and diagnostic evaluations
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized treatment plans
  • Provide individual, group, and/or family therapy using evidence-based modalities
  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation in compliance with 42 CFR Part 2, CARF, and IDHS/DBHR standards
  • Coordinate care with medical providers, counselors, and case management staff
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and clinical case consultations
  • Complete crisis intervention and safety planning as needed
  • Maintain compliance with all agency policies, confidentiality requirements, and applicable state/federal regulations
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and audit-readiness efforts as needed

Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted Illinois LCSW license (IDFPR) in good standing
  • Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program
  • Experience providing clinical services in a behavioral health, substance use treatment, or OTP setting preferred
  • Familiarity with 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality regulations and CARF accreditation standards a plus
  • Experience with co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance use) preferred
  • Strong assessment, documentation, and clinical judgment skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems

Pay Range

$41.00–$52.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. As a 1099 independent contractor role, this rate is paid gross; the contractor is responsible for their own tax withholding, and the position does not include employee benefits (e.g., health insurance, PTO, retirement contributions).

Schedule & Engagement

Part-time, 1099 independent contractor engagement; flexible scheduling available. Specific days/hours to be discussed during the interview process. There is potential for this role to transition to a full-time, employed position in the future as GCC's program continues to grow.

Why Join GCC

  • Be part of a mission-driven, CARF-accredited organization making a meaningful impact in the Chicago community
  • Collaborative, supportive multidisciplinary team environment
  • Opportunity to contribute to a growing behavioral health program
  • Competitive, experience-based compensation
