Part Time Laboratory information

What is a part time laboratory job?

Part-time laboratory jobs are positions in scientific or medical labs where individuals work fewer hours than a full-time schedule, often to accommodate students or those seeking flexible work arrangements. These roles typically involve assisting with experiments, preparing samples, maintaining equipment, and supporting research or diagnostic activities. Part-time laboratory workers may include lab assistants, technicians, or aides working in academic, clinical, or industrial settings. The responsibilities and required qualifications can vary depending on the specific lab and field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time laboratory technician?

To thrive as a Part-Time Laboratory Technician, you need a background in biological or chemical sciences, attention to detail, and familiarity with standard lab procedures, often supported by an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Proficiency with laboratory instruments, data entry systems, and safety protocols is typically required, and some positions may prefer certifications such as ASCP. Strong organizational skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate testing, maintaining safety standards, and supporting efficient laboratory operations.

What are some common challenges faced by part time laboratory staff, and how can they be managed?

Part-time laboratory staff often face challenges such as adapting to varying schedules, quickly learning lab protocols, and maintaining effective communication with full-time colleagues. To manage these challenges, it's important to stay organized, proactively seek clarification on procedures, and utilize shared documentation or lab management systems to stay updated. Building good relationships with the team and participating in regular briefings can also help part-time staff stay aligned with ongoing projects and safety requirements.

  • Availability for daytime and evening shifts, with openness to weekend shifts that may begin in the near term, including the possibility of virtual weekend coverage
  • A calm and non-judgmental communication style

It would also be great if you have:

  • An ambitious and independent nature
  • Nurse clinician or charge nurse experience
  • Clinical experience working with members of LGBTQ2S+, gender and sexually diverse communities
  • Experience working in the private sector, a start-up, or a technology company
  • Experience working from a trauma-informed lens

Compensation:

  • $39.90 - $44.23 / hour (equivalent to earning $83,000 - $92,000 / year if working full time hours)
  • The compensation range listed above may vary depending on a candidate's relevant qualifications, knowledge, competencies and work experience, and other factors including market conditions.
