As a member of our interdisciplinary team, contributes professional prehospital EMS knowledge and skills to patients and their families. Maintains excellent patient service skills, is able to work well under pressure, and make quick decisions about patient health. Provides a level of care outlined by the State of Iowa Scope of Practice in accordance to their state EMS certification level and hospital policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence and Patient Care
  • Proficient in driving the ambulance in emergent and non-emergent situations.
  • Maintains ambulance cleanliness and always restocking of supplies.
  • Performs patient assessment and initiates care using standing orders within their scope of practice in the pre-hospital setting taking primary care of patients when appropriate by utilizing critical thinking in making independent judgements.
  • When not using standing orders follows the direction of the physician or physician designee by telephone or radio communications.
  • Guides other EMT's in the delivery of quality patient care.
  • Works cooperatively with law enforcement and fire departments at scenes.
  • Works side by side with other EMS personnel, nursing staff, and physicians as part of the care team in the emergency room.
  • Promptly completes documentation of prehospital patient care reports within 24 hours, per Iowa Code, to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
  • Promptly completes documentation in the patient's EPIC chart to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
  • Provide basis and emergent care to emergency room patient(s).
  • Utilizes physical assessment data, diagnostic data (lab, radiology, diagnostic testing), pharmacological information and patient/family perceptions related to focus problem areas and identifying goals of care.
  • Performs hospital-based duties such as IV insertion, administration of limited medications appropriate for individual's level of certification under the supervision of the Registered Nurse* and assists Registered Nurses in Emergency Room and other patient care areas.* Follow specific Emergency Department guidelines.
  • Provides high benefit, lower risk advanced skills for systems that cannot support or justify Paramedic level care.
  • Inserts airways that are not intended to be placed into the trachea.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
  • Carries out high quality patient care while following the scope of practice set out by the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services Scope of Practice.
  • Performs Triage assessment process per specific department standards to include patient history, physical, and psycho-social assessment.
  • Implements the plan of care according to current standards of nursing practice, evidence-based practice, and hospital protocol/procedures and under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Administers medications and treatments within scope of practice. Assists with critical patient care, CPR, Trauma patient care when needed.

Development & Patient Education
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance patient care practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Maintains continuing education to support renewal every two years.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the hospitalization, including the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching.
  • Integrates preventative health maintenance into the education plan.
  • Assists in the orientation of new associates. Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and training and serves on committees.
  • Assists with performance improvement and the collection, compilation and reporting of data as directed.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Completion and certification of an accredited Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course.

Experience:
  • Minimum of two years' experience as an Emergency Medical Technician.

License(s)/Certification(s):
  • Must possess and maintain a valid clean driver's license
  • Must possess and maintain current AEMT licensure in good standing.
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to perform basic/advanced care procedures in the administration of medication therapy and the operation of specialized equipment.
  • Ability to complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Customer/patient focused.
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgement in making decisions.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
