Summary
HII Mission Technologies is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Machinist to join our advanced fabrication team on a part time, on call basis. This role is ideal for a machining professional who enjoys mentoring others while supporting a variety of research, prototyping, and fabrication projects. Work hours will vary based on project timelines, training needs, and equipment support requirements.
What You Will Do
• Deliver hands-on training for lab staff and research personnel on CAD/CAM software, CNC machining best practices, and waterjet cutting operations.
• Develop training materials, demonstrations, and exercises to strengthen team technical capabilities.
• Set up, program, operate, and maintain CNC mills/lathes and waterjet cutting equipment to support precision part fabrication and prototyping.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving machining equipment, air systems, mechanical components, and related lab infrastructure.
• Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure equipment reliability.
• Provide basic to intermediate electrical support related to machinery, including wiring, controls, and sensors.
• Collaborate with research and engineering teams on custom fabrication for Navy partners and project efforts such as CRADA, SBIR, and ANTX-CT.
• Offer technical guidance related to machining processes, material selection, and design-for-manufacturability.
• Promote and enforce safe operating procedures, PPE use, and compliance with lab and industry safety standards.
• Maintain accurate documentation of training, maintenance, troubleshooting, and project support.
• Submit monthly status reports to management.
What You Must Have
• Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years experience; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years related (DoD/USN) experience.
• 10+ years of professional experience as a Machinist, CNC operator/programmer, or similar role.
• Strong proficiency in CAD/CAM software such as Fusion, SolidWorks, Mastercam, or equivalent.
• Hands-on expertise with CNC mills/lathes and waterjet cutting systems.
• Strong mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical troubleshooting capabilities.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
• Excellent communication skills with a passion for teaching and mentoring users at all skill levels.
• Commitment to safety and best practices in a lab or workshop environment.
• Availability for on-call support during business hours or as needed for project demands.
Preferred Requirements
• Certifications in machining, CNC programming, or related technical fields.
• Experience in research, prototyping, or educational lab environments.
• Familiarity with metals, plastics, composites, and other fabrication materials.
• Experience with basic to intermediate electrical troubleshooting and repairs.
Physical Requirements
Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the job. A waterfront office work environment is normally encountered.
