STAR, Inc., is a non-profit located in Norwalk, CT that provides support services to adult aged individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities and their families for over 70 years. This takes many different forms but all with the same goal of improving the lives of those we serve. We help the individuals we support become the fullest versions of themselves through the values of inclusion, independence, and freedom of choice.

A Day in the Life of a Residential Instructor:

As a residential instructor you would start every shift ready to help those we serve live their life as independently as possible. You would assist with activities of daily living such as administering medication, cooking meals, performing personal hygiene, transportation to medical appointments, ensuring our individuals are safe, happy and healthy.

You also assist in the implementation of individual behavioral plans. Using effective teaching and mentoring techniques, you teach them new skills and help them achieve goals. Based on each individual's preferences and behavioral plans, you encourage their interests and drive them to community outings and recreational activities. You are happy to help them find greater access to the community. You are conscientious about reporting any concerns about their health and safety and keeping documentation accurate and up-to-date.

While you accomplish all of this you will know that you have profoundly impacted the lives of people you serve in ways both large and small. Every shift you work you have a chance to make a difference!

Qualifications for the Job:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • A valid driver's license

Schedule:

Our group homes opperate of a 24 hour schedule.  Our part time shifts are mostly 2nd shifts with weekday and weekend availability.  Weekly hours can range anywhere from 8 hours a week up to 29 hours a week.
