What is a part time industrial engineering job?

A Part Time Industrial Engineering job involves optimizing processes, improving efficiency, and reducing waste within a company while working fewer hours than a full-time role. Responsibilities may include analyzing production systems, implementing process improvements, and supporting quality control. These roles are common in manufacturing, logistics, and service industries. Part-time positions provide flexibility and are ideal for students, professionals seeking work-life balance, or those looking to gain experience in industrial engineering.

What are the typical responsibilities of a part time industrial engineer?

In a part-time industrial engineering role, you may support a range of projects such as analyzing workflow efficiencies, assisting with data collection for process improvements, or helping to implement Lean manufacturing initiatives. Your responsibilities could include time studies, preparing reports, supporting ongoing quality improvement efforts, and collaborating with engineering and production teams. Since the role is part-time, your focus is often on specific tasks or projects with clear, measurable outcomes. This arrangement offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and work with cross-functional teams without a full-time commitment.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a part time industrial engineering position?

To excel in a Part Time Industrial Engineering role, you typically need a background in industrial or manufacturing engineering, strong analytical skills, and familiarity with process improvement methodologies. Proficiency with software like AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and knowledge of Lean or Six Sigma principles is often expected, along with relevant certifications being a plus. Excellent problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are valuable soft skills in this position. These competencies are critical for identifying efficiency improvements, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering results within a flexible, often project-based work schedule.

Can you work from home as a part time industrial engineer?

Part time industrial engineers typically work on-site to analyze and improve manufacturing processes, supply chains, and operational efficiency. However, some tasks such as data analysis, report writing, and software modeling can be performed remotely if the employer allows it. The feasibility depends on the specific job responsibilities and company policies.

Is there a demand for part time industrial engineers?

Part time industrial engineering positions are available, especially in industries seeking flexible staffing or consulting services. Demand depends on economic conditions, industry needs, and the ability to apply skills in process optimization, data analysis, and project management. Opportunities may be more limited compared to full-time roles but can be found in manufacturing, logistics, and consulting sectors.

Job description

At MKEC, it's all about our team. We're passionate about our mission of providing superior engineering solutions that are responsive to our clients' needs. Since our start in 1982, our growth has been fueled by respect for each other and a shared commitment to achieving our goals.

We're looking for a Part-Time Construction Inspector to join our team at our Wichita location. This individual will assist with a variety of projects from any of our civil engineering service areas: Land Development, Public Works, Transportation, and Industrial/Energy.

This position operates on a project-by-project schedule with variable hours throughout the year rather than a steady weekly schedule. During active construction periods, work will probably be full-time (30-40+ hours per week over 5-6 days), followed by multi-week or multi-month gaps between projects with minimal to no hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily inspections on municipal and civil projects (roadways, utilities, earthwork) to verify compliance with plans, specs, and codes.
  • Prepare detailed daily inspection logs (IDRs), including photos, pay quantities, weather conditions, contractor crew sizes, and site progress.
  • Communicate daily with contractors, engineers, and clients.
  • Perform or observe basic field sampling/testing (concrete slump/air, soil density) and verify proper installation of rebar, aggregate, and bedding.
  • Monitor job sites for adherence to traffic control plans (MUTCD), and SWPPP/erosion control rules.
  • Measure installed field quantities for contractor pay estimates and maintain accurate as-built records.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Tech or Construction Management preferred.
  • 2-5 years of civil construction inspection or hands-on trades experience (roadways, utilities, earthwork).
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering plan sheets, detail drawings, and project specs.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable coordinating with field crews and clients.
  • Proficient with mobile tablets, PDF tools, and digital daily reporting apps.
  • Ability to work part-time hours based on active contractor schedules and weather windows.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather, walk on uneven terrain, stand for long periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Certification
  • State DOT or SWPPP Inspector Certification

Benefits:

  • 401k Retirement Plan*
  • Profit Sharing Plan*
  • YMCA Discounted Membership
  • Employee Assistance Program

*If the employee meets the eligibility criteria.
