What is a part time Indian?

A 'Part Time Indian' typically refers to someone who identifies with Native American heritage but may not fully participate in tribal life or cultural traditions. The term gained popularity from the novel 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian' by Sherman Alexie, which explores the experiences of a Native American teenager navigating life between his reservation and a predominantly white school. It is not a formal job title but can describe the experience of moving between different cultural worlds. People may use the term to discuss issues of identity, belonging, and cultural adaptation.
