This position is responsible for performing the functions of an Operating Room Technician in collaboration with the Operating Room Registered Nurse. The OR Tech is responsible for adhering to AORN Standards of Practice, managing supplies and equipment with the direction of Operating Room Registered Nurse, and for promoting team work with physicians and personnel of other departments. The OR Tech will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of Perioperative Services along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates.

This is a part-time position working Monday-Friday (variable days) from 6:45am - 5:15pm with mandatory call.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The individual in this position reports to the Perioperative Services Director. This position works closely with staff members and physicians in order to promote optimal care for the surgical patient.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of sterile/aseptic technique and recognizes and corrects any breaks in this technique.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of location, care and use of all equipment/supplies pertaining to Operating Room.
  3. Maintains sterile field at all times.
  4. Perform room turnovers. Assist with instrument turnover and washing instruments as time permits.
  5. Change bed linens on patient stretchers as necessary while patient is in OR.
  6. Assist with weekly and monthly housekeeping functions including defrosting the refrigerator on a regular basis.
  7. Assist perioperative staff with patient transfers and restless patients.
  8. Plans for tasks and equipment associated with case.
  9. Requests clarification on assignments as needed. Follows through and completes job assignments within agreed upon time frame.
  10. Reports any equipment that is not in working order to assigned RN.
  11. Delivers specimens and tests to appropriate areas.
  12. Assist with picking cases, putting away supplies, and other Sterile Core Tech functions.
  13. Identifies problems and/or need for improvement and communicates this information to the Perioperative Services Director.
  14. Participates in developing, reviewing, and revising policies and procedures.
  15. Assists with orientation of new employees as directed.
  16. Covers for absentee replacement on short notice.
  17. Initiates CPR as necessary.
  18. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  19. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  20. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  21. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  22. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  23. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Graduate of a basic Operating Room Technician Program or one year of general surgical experience preferred.

License:

  1. Certified Surgical Technician (CST) preferred.

Certification:

  1. Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire.

Experience:

  1. One year of general surgical experience preferred.

  1. Demonstrates competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist.
  2. Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
  3. Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.
  4. Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Frequent and at times prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  2. Manual dexterity.
  3. Heavy physical effort, ability to lift/carry up to 25 lbs. (supplies and equipment).
  4. Good reading eyesight. Able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally. Full visual acuity, color perception.
  5. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
