Part-Time K–12 Math Tutor

Company: Sylvan Learning

Employment Type: Part-time, in-person

Pay Range: $18–$20 per hour


Position Overview

Sylvan Learning is seeking an enthusiastic and academically strong Math Tutor to help students improve their mathematical understanding, problem-solving abilities, and confidence.

The Math Tutor may work with elementary, middle school, or high school students based on the instructor’s experience and subject expertise. Areas may include basic math, fractions, decimals, pre-algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Precalculus. Knowledge of Statistics or Calculus is a plus.

Instructors may use Sylvan’s structured, preplanned curriculum or assist students with classwork, homework, and test preparation.


Required Availability

Applicants must be available during the following instructional hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 2:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 3:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Actual scheduled shifts and weekly hours may vary based on enrollment, staffing needs, and student schedules.


Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide engaging math instruction individually and in groups of up to four students.
  • Teach assigned math concepts based on the instructor’s areas of expertise.
  • Help students understand classwork, homework, and challenging problems.
  • Prepare students for classroom tests and other academic assessments.
  • Follow Sylvan’s instructional methods, curriculum, and preplanned lessons.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving strategies.
  • Adapt explanations to each student’s grade level and learning needs.
  • Encourage students and help build confidence in mathematics.
  • Document student progress and complete required instructional notes.
  • Use tablets and instructional technology as required.
  • Complete all required Sylvan training.
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of the mathematics levels the applicant wishes to teach.
  • Ability to solve problems accurately and explain each step clearly.
  • Ability to work with up to three students completing different lessons.
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Experience working with children or teenagers.
  • Consistent availability during the required instructional hours.
  • Reliable transportation to the assigned Sylvan center.
  • Ability to follow established curriculum and center procedures.
  • Ability to complete applicable background-screening requirements, consistent with state and local law.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, teaching credential, current college enrollment, or relevant coursework in mathematics, engineering, science, education, or a related field.
  • One to two years of teaching, tutoring, or classroom experience.
  • Advanced subject knowledge for applicants teaching high school mathematics.
  • Experience supporting students with different academic needs and learning styles.
