Non-Contract
$15.00-$19.00/hour


SUMMARY OF POSITION


Under the direction of the Lead Lifeguard and Aquatics Manager, the Lifeguard is responsible for providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment for the Fairview Heights Recreation Complex. In addition, the Lifeguard will assist in overseeing and maintaining all areas related to the Aquatic Center, including the pool, locker rooms, pool deck, and surrounding areas.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (Essential functions including the following and the Physical Requirements listed below):


Act as a representative of the Fairview Heights Recreation Complex in the community and maintain a professional image
Provide outstanding and results-driven customer service 

Act with a sense of urgency and respond in a timely manner to complaints, questions, and inquiries from members and the public with regard to the Recreation Complex's services and policies
Enforce Recreation Complex Aquatics Center rules and regulations by educating patrons about hazards and stopping dangerous behaviors to ensure a safe swimming experience
Prevent injuries and minimize hazardous situations; respond quickly and effectively to all injuries, accidents and emergency situations as they arise
Conduct swim tests for pool patrons as needed before they are allowed to go into deep water
Prepare the Aquatic Center for opening and closing by following standard operating procedures and documenting & reporting any unsafe conditions or equipment to the Lead Lifeguard/Aquatics Manager
Perform necessary tasks to insure that locker rooms, pool, pool deck, pool entrance, and all surrounding areas are clean and free of hazards
Test and document pool water chemistry and report discrepancies or issues to Lead Lifeguard/Aquatics Manager
Maintain regular, timely attendance on an ongoing basis
Attend staff meetings and training sessions to enhance job performance
Assist in planning and executing events and day-to-day operations of the Recreation Complex
Other duties as assigned by Lead Lifeguard, Aquatics Manager, and/or their designee
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 16 years of age
One (1) year of lifeguard experience preferred
Possess current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to become certified within one (1) month of hire


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of and ability to interpret and enforce Recreation Complex Aquatics Center rules and regulations
Demonstrate and maintain a minimum level of physical fitness and swimming ability
Results-driven work style, high degree of initiative
Ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity and dependability while demonstrating a friendly, enthusiastic and positive attitude
Ability to communicate effectively while interpreting policies and procedures.
Ability to operate cleaning equipment
Ability to react calmly, effectively and with urgency in emergency situations
Knowledge of and skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
Ability to prepare and submit routine administrative forms and reports in a timely manner
Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions


WORKING CONDITIONS


While performing the duties of this job, the position may work near moving mechanical parts, in high and precarious places, around fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals, and may be at risk for electrical shock. The noise level in the environment is occasionally loud. Occasionally, the indoor Aquatics Center may be wet and humid. The outdoor work environment may result in exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity. Extended workdays and varied hours are a frequent occurrence, as are weekends and holidays, to support the needs and demands of the Recreation Complex.


OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS


Function as a swim instructor and provide quality instruction if trained and scheduled to do so
Act as a substitute swim instructor in the event that scheduled instructors are unable or fail to report for their scheduled lesson(s)


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


This position requires the ability to talk, hear, and see, remain alert with no lapses of consciousness; position also requires frequent periods of sitting in an elevated chair
The employee will be frequently required to stand, walk, squat, push (100 pounds), kneel, sit, crouch, stoop, pull (100 pounds), carry (50 pounds), lift (50 pounds), and climb
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus to observe all areas of the pool and attached deck
Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distance; clearly hear noises and distress signals
Perform all needed rescue skills
