Part Time Immigration Attorney information

What are the typical challenges faced by part-time immigration attorneys, and how can they manage their caseload effectively?

Part-time immigration attorneys often face the challenge of balancing a fluctuating caseload with limited working hours, which can make it difficult to keep up with fast-changing immigration laws and tight deadlines. Effective time management and clear communication with clients and colleagues are essential to ensure all cases progress smoothly. Additionally, many part-time attorneys work as part of a team or collaborate with paralegals, so establishing reliable systems for tracking case status and delegating tasks can help streamline workflow. Utilizing legal practice management software and setting clear client expectations also contribute to managing workload efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Immigration Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Immigration Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the state bar, and in-depth knowledge of immigration law and procedures. Familiarity with case management software, legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and government immigration systems is typically required. Strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and time management skills help attorneys effectively advocate for clients and balance part-time workloads. These competencies ensure accurate legal representation, client trust, and efficiency in navigating complex immigration matters.

What is the difference between Part Time Immigration Attorney vs Immigration Paralegal?

AspectPart Time Immigration AttorneyImmigration Paralegal
CredentialsLaw degree, bar admission, specialized immigration certificationsAssociate's degree or paralegal certification, often with immigration training
Work EnvironmentLaw firms, legal clinics, government agenciesLaw firms, legal departments, nonprofit organizations
Job RoleProvides legal advice, represents clients, handles complex immigration casesPrepares documents, conducts research, supports attorneys with case management

While both roles support immigration cases, a Part Time Immigration Attorney offers legal representation and advice, requiring a law degree and bar admission. An Immigration Paralegal assists attorneys with case preparation and documentation, typically with less formal legal credentials. The attorney role involves more direct client interaction and legal decision-making, whereas the paralegal focuses on supporting tasks within the legal process.

What does a part-time immigration attorney do?

A part-time immigration attorney provides legal assistance and representation to clients on immigration matters, such as visas, green cards, citizenship applications, and deportation defense, but works fewer hours than a full-time attorney. Their duties may include consulting with clients, preparing legal documents, attending hearings, and advising on immigration laws and procedures. Part-time attorneys often balance their workload to accommodate other personal or professional commitments, offering flexible scheduling to clients.

Bilingual Administrative Assistant - Part-Time

Job description

De Wit Immigration Law is hiring a bilingual Administrative Assistant to work part-time in our Miami Shores office. This is the person who gets our case filings out the door.

Every petition this firm sends to the government passes through your hands before the attorney signs it. You print it, assemble it, check it against our filing checklist, scan it into the client file, and send it out by FedEx. You collect the mail each day, scan the notices the agencies send back, and file them in Google Drive and in the paper client file.

The work is hands-on, and it is most of the job. It is also the reason our filings arrive complete and on time. This is not a front-desk position: our intake team handles client calls remotely, so you would greet the occasional visitor rather than work a phone.

The schedule is twenty to twenty-five hours a week, four or five hours a day, Monday through Friday, at $20 to $25 an hour. We will settle on a daily window that works for both of us, and once it is set, it stays put. We are flexible about when you work. We are not flexible about being able to count on you.

That suits someone who needs the rest of the day for class or another commitment. If you are considering law school or a career in immigration, you will see how real cases are assembled and filed, which is difficult to learn anywhere but inside a firm.

Benefits include health insurance (the firm pays up to 99% of the employee's premium on our benchmark plan), vision coverage, a 401(k) with an employer match, 15 days of paid time off per year (prorated for part-time), 10 paid holidays, and a paid day off on your birthday.

HOW TO APPLY: To be considered, please complete our application at the link below.

https://careers.dewit.law/job?role=admin-assistant-part-time&utm_source=wizehire

The application includes a short writing exercise and an attention-to-detail test, and it asks for your resume, a cover letter, and a one-minute introduction video. Please set aside about 20 to 30 minutes. Applications completed through our portal are the ones our review team evaluates.

Compensation:

$20 - $25 hourly

Responsibilities:
  • Print and assemble case filings, and check each one against our filing checklist before it goes to the attorney for signature.

  • Scan completed filings into the client file and send them out by FedEx.

  • Collect the daily mail, scan agency correspondence, and file it in Google Drive and in the physical client file.

  • Keep the office running: supplies, vendors, and the occasional errand.

  • Greet visitors to the office and help our remote intake team with overflow when they need it.

Qualifications:
  • You are fully fluent in English and Spanish, spoken and written. This is required.

  • You can work in person at our Miami Shores office on a set weekday schedule, four or five hours a day.

  • You are comfortable with hands-on work, because that is most of this job: printing and assembling case filings, checking them against a checklist, scanning, filing, and getting mail and FedEx packages out the door.

  • You are careful and accurate, and you can follow a written checklist exactly. What leaves this office goes to the government, so the details matter.

  • You are reliable and punctual, since the day's mail and filing deadlines depend on you being here.

  • Office experience helps, but we do not require it, and we do not require a degree. Students, parents returning to work, and anyone looking for steady part-time hours are welcome to apply.
