What is a part time ice cream shop job?

Part time ice cream shop jobs involve working in an ice cream store or parlor for fewer hours than a full-time schedule, typically under 30-35 hours per week. Common duties include serving ice cream, preparing sundaes or milkshakes, greeting customers, handling cash registers, and keeping the shop clean. These positions are popular among students and those seeking flexible hours, often requiring evening or weekend availability. No extensive experience is usually necessary, but strong customer service skills are important.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges for someone working part time at an ice cream shop?

As a part-time employee at an ice cream shop, you can expect to handle a mix of customer service, product preparation, and cleaning duties. Common responsibilities include scooping ice cream, operating the cash register, restocking supplies, and maintaining cleanliness in the serving and seating areas. A frequent challenge is managing busy periods, especially during warm weather or special events, while keeping service friendly and efficient. Teamwork is important, as staff often coordinate to ensure orders are filled quickly and the shop runs smoothly. This role offers valuable experience in customer interaction, multitasking, and working in a fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time ice cream shop employee, and why are they important?

Experience using point-of-sale (POS) systems and following food safety protocols is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and a friendly attitude help you deliver excellent customer experiences and handle busy periods. Job description

Create Moments That Matter

Now Hiring: Ice Cream Scoopers – Salt & Straw

At Salt & Straw, we believe in making it count—every scoop and every guest interaction.

We're hiring Scoopers to create memorable experiences. More than serving ice cream, Scoopers guide guests through our flavors, share ingredient stories, and create meaningful connections.

If you love working with people, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and value kindness, curiosity, and hospitality, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

Scoopers are at the heart of the Salt & Straw experience, creating memorable moments for guests while helping the shop run smoothly.

You will:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create welcoming experiences for every guest

  • Share flavor stories, offer samples, and help guests discover their next favorite scoop

  • Scoop ice cream, make waffle cones, operate the register, and support daily shop operations

  • Greet guests, answer questions, and help guide the flow of the shop

  • Accurately process transactions and assist with online and delivery orders

  • Prepare products according to recipes and quality standards

  • Restock ice cream, supplies, and retail products throughout the shift

  • Maintain food safety, cleanliness, and organization standards across the shop

  • Support dishwashing, cleaning, and other operational tasks that keep the shop running smoothly

  • Work collaboratively with teammates to create a positive and supportive environment

Why You'll Love It Here

  • We offer competitive pay, flexible scheduling, meaningful benefits, and opportunities to grow.

  • Financial Flexibility: Optional earned wage access and a 401(k) match after three months—even for part-time Team Members

  • Health & Wellness: Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits may become available upon reaching eligibility requirements

  • Mental Health Support: Free, 24/7 access to licensed mental health professionals for Team Members and their families

  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible scheduling, paid sick time, paid parental leave, and paid voting time

  •  Education & Growth: Up to $1,800 annually in Educational Assistance plus opportunities to grow into Shift Coordinator, Assistant General Manager, and General Manager roles

  • Team Discount: 30% off all the magic

  • First Dibs on Flavors before the public

  • Pet Insurance and additional wellness benefits

  • Flexible Spending Accounts, commuter benefits, and more

You're a Great Fit If You:

  • Are 16+ years old

  • Can work evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Can work at least 3 shifts per week, including 2 closing shifts

  • Enjoy working with people and creating memorable guest experiences

  • Have strong communication skills and a positive attitude

  • Thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy staying busy

  • Work well as part of a team and support those around you

  • Are curious, dependable, and eager to learn

  • Have food service, retail, coffee, restaurant, hospitality, or customer service experience (preferred but not required)

  • Are comfortable discussing flavors, offering samples, and engaging with guests

Ready to Scoop the Unbelievable? This is more than a job. It’s a chance to build something that matters, with your hands, your heart, and a whole lot of ice cream.

Important Notes

  • Food Allergy Warning: This role involves working in an environment where common food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, seafood) are present.

  • Equal Employment Opportunity: Salt & Straw is committed to creating an inclusive workplace and provides equal opportunity to all applicants, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or background.
