What is a part time host?

Part time hosts are employees who work limited hours, often at restaurants, events, or hospitality venues, and are responsible for greeting guests, managing reservations, and ensuring a smooth flow of seating. They typically work fewer hours than full-time staff, making the role ideal for students or those seeking flexible schedules. Part time hosts play a key role in creating a welcoming atmosphere and may also assist with basic customer service and administrative tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time host, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Host, you need strong customer service skills, organization, and the ability to multitask, typically requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with reservation systems, point-of-sale (POS) software, and phone etiquette is often expected. Excellent communication, a welcoming demeanor, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These abilities are vital for ensuring smooth guest experiences, efficient seating, and a positive restaurant atmosphere.

How does working as a part-time host typically impact opportunities for advancement in the hospitality industry?

Working as a part-time host is an excellent entry point into the hospitality industry, as it allows you to gain firsthand experience with guest relations, reservation systems, and teamwork. Hosts often work closely with servers, managers, and kitchen staff, which helps develop strong communication and multitasking skills. Many restaurants and hotels offer advancement opportunities to hosts who demonstrate reliability, a positive attitude, and leadership potential—such as moving into full-time roles, server positions, or even supervisory roles. Consistently showing initiative and learning about the broader operations can open doors for career growth within the organization.

Job description

II BRUTTO is hiring for a PART-TIME HOST

Il Brutto is a neighborhood spot in East Austin serving authentic Italian food meaning what you would eat in Italy, presented in exactly the same way. Helmed by Chef Erind Halilaj, previously of Obic Mozzarella Bar in New York, the menu features fresh antipasti, housemade pasta, and pizza baked in the restaurant s Neapolitan wood-burning oven. Il Brutto s beverage program highlights an extensive selection of Italian wines from an on-site cellar, as well as local beers, simple, handcrafted cocktails, and an exciting selection of amari and vermouth.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Host is the first impression of Il Brutto and plays a key role in shaping every guest's experience. This role is equal parts hospitality, organization, and communication balancing reservations, managing the flow of the dining room, and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere from the moment guests arrive. The right person is personable, composed under pressure, and enjoys making people feel taken care of.

What you'll do:

  • Welcome every guest with genuine hospitality and set the tone for an exceptional dining experience.
  • Manage reservations, waitlists, and seating to ensure an efficient flow of service.
  • Thoughtfully coordinate seating arrangements while communicating reservation details and guest preferences with the service team.
  • Escort guests to their tables and provide menus while answering basic questions about the restaurant and menu.
  • Monitor the pace of the dining room to provide accurate wait times and maximize the guest experience.
  • Maintain guest profiles and reservation notes to help create personalized, memorable visits.
  • Communicate effectively with servers, managers, and support staff to keep service running smoothly.
  • Respond to guest questions and concerns with professionalism, escalating when needed.
  • Keep the host stand, entryway, restrooms, and guest-facing spaces clean, organized, and welcoming.
  • Share neighborhood recommendations, parking information, and local insights with guests when appropriate.
  • Jump in to support the team wherever needed, whether that's resetting tables, assisting with service, or helping maintain the dining room.

Who you are:

  • You genuinely enjoy welcoming people and creating memorable first impressions.
  • You stay calm, organized, and friendly, even when the restaurant is at its busiest.
  • You're a strong communicator who enjoys working closely with a team.
  • You notice the little things and understand they make a big difference in the guest experience.
  • You're confident multitasking and can prioritize without losing attention to detail.
  • You're resourceful, dependable, and always willing to jump in where help is needed.
  • You have positive energy, enjoy learning, and take pride in delivering thoughtful hospitality.
