Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator I.

The part-time Program Coordinator I supports the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Outreach Engagement (COE) by coordinating and supporting Community Health Advisors (CHAs) at the county level for Dallas County, AL The position focuses on cancer prevention and control through community outreach, education, engagement, and referral to services such as cancer screenings, HPV vaccination, and Quitline referrals.

The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States and is the only one in Alabama and in the Deep South region. A comprehensive designation also means UAB Medicine patients have access to leading-edge treatments or clinical trials that they may not otherwise have at local community hospitals or smaller cancer centers. For many, an NCI designation can hold the key to survival. On campus and around Birmingham, the O'Neal Cancer Center is a significant part of our economic powerhouse. The O'Neal Cancer Center powers more than 400 scientists and physician-scientists, cares for 20,000 patients annually, and is home to more than 160 employees, plus all the physicians and clinical staff engaged in cancer patient care. General Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, coordinates administrative, personnel and logistical support for a defined department program.

  • Carries out established program objectives and directives.

  • Determines the best approach to accomplish assignments.

  • May supervise support staff.

  • Communicates, using a variety of media, with internal and external constituencies.

  • May be responsible for adherence to program budget and/or other fiscal duties.

  • May assist with grant and contract preparation and submission.

  • May handle data management.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Recruits, trains, and supports Community Health Advisors (CHAs) within assigned county/counties.

  2. Plans and facilitates monthly CHA meetings and coordinates community outreach activities.

  3. Monitors CHA activities and provides technical and logistical support.

  4. Partners with community organizations to deliver cancer prevention education and resources.

  5. Facilitates referrals to cancer screening services, HPV vaccination, Quitline, and related support services, including follow-up.

  6. Meets referral expectations (minimum of 5 new cancer screening referrals per month).

  7. Enters and manages program data in REDCap.

  8. Submits incentive requests and provides administrative and programmatic support to COE.

  9. Provides research and recruitment support as needed.

  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Must reside in the work location, Dallas County, AL. Primarily based in the assigned county/counties with regular community-based work. Some activities may take place at UAB or partner sites as needed.

Work Schedule: Part-time, approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility required to meet community needs.

Travel Requirements: Local travel within assigned counties and surrounding areas. Some evening and occasional weekend work is required to support community events and outreach activities.

Hourly Range:    $15.00 - $21.95

High School diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience required.

Preferences

Hard Skills: Experience with community outreach, public health, social services, or health education.  Data entry and reporting experience (REDCap or similar systems preferred). Experience coordinating community programs or volunteers.

Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Cultural humility and the ability to work with diverse communities. Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills. Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred experience: social work, community outreach experience, 20 hours/week, flexible work schedule. Ability to walk 1 mile/day and stand 2 hours/day occasionally. Able to lift 40 lbs occasionally.
