What does a part time graphic designer do?

A part time graphic designer creates visual content such as logos, advertisements, social media graphics, and marketing materials for clients or employers, typically working fewer hours than a full-time designer. They often collaborate with other team members to develop concepts and ensure brand consistency, using design software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Their schedules are flexible, and they may work on a freelance, contract, or in-house basis, depending on the needs of the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Graphic Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in design principles, and typically a portfolio demonstrating relevant experience or a degree in graphic design. Mastery of tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital asset management systems are crucial. Creativity, effective communication, and time management are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure you can deliver high-quality, on-brand visuals efficiently and collaborate well with clients or teams on a flexible schedule.

What are some typical challenges faced by part-time graphic designers when working with multiple clients or projects?

Part-time graphic designers often juggle several clients or projects simultaneously, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Balancing varied client expectations and deadlines requires strong organizational skills and clear communication. Additionally, adapting to different brand guidelines and project scopes on a part-time schedule may demand flexibility and quick creative thinking. Staying proactive about feedback and revisions is also key to maintaining positive client relationships and delivering quality work within limited hours.

We are more than just an iconic museum; we're a fast-paced, high-energy team driven by innovation, passion, and a deep love for car culture and storytelling. From world-class exhibitions to unforgettable events, we bring history, design, and horsepower to life every day. At Petersen Automotive Museum, we work hard, move fast, and have a blast doing it, all while pushing the boundaries of what a museum can be. If you're ready to set the vision with a crew that values creativity, integrity, and a good laugh along the way, you'll fit right in.
About the Role
Are you a creative Graphic Designer with sharp organizational instincts and a talent for keeping projects moving seamlessly? Do you thrive in dynamic, collaborative environments where your design eye, technical precision, and clear communication keep creative initiatives running on schedule? We're looking for an enthusiastic part-time Graphic Designer / Project Coordinator to join our Design department. Reporting directly to the Design Manager, you will team up with our Design crew to bring visual ideas to life, handle key project logistics, and ensure top-notch follow-up across a wide range of graphic design initiatives.
What You'll Do
  • Project Tracking & Logistics: Respond to and log incoming design requests in the department's Trello board, maintaining progress updates and proactively keeping projects moving forward.
  • Resource & Vendor Coordination: Determine necessary resources for design briefs, collaborating with print vendors, suppliers, contractors, and internal team members to execute projects.
  • Creative Design & Execution: Provide creative support for design briefs both independently and collaboratively, ensuring all deliverables align with brand parameters.
  • Cross-Functional Communication: Maintain consistent contact with colleagues, outside contractors, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Industry & Brand Engagement: Stay current on design technologies, tools, and production methods, while seeking opportunities for team recognition through design awards, competitions, and publications.

Who You Are & What You Bring
  • Experienced Designer: 3+ years of relevant professional experience with a B.A. or Certificate in Graphic Design (or equivalent experience backed by a strong portfolio).
  • Creative & Brand-Focused: Strong typography skills, excellent design sense, and visual restraint with a commitment to maintaining brand guidelines.
  • Tech & Design Savvy: Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop; video editing skills are a plus) and working knowledge of file organization and naming conventions.
  • Production Knowledge: Technical understanding of the design process across digital and print/production environments (or a strong desire to master it on the job).
  • Resourceful Problem Solver: Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to communicate directly with vendors and stakeholders beyond email.

The pay range for this role is:
27 - 30 USD per hour (Petersen Automotive Museum)
