Job description

Bartlett Park District is a local government agency that provides 610 acres of beautiful parks and outstanding recreational opportunities for the residents of Bartlett, Illinois and surrounding communities. Major facilities of this Distinguished Accredited Agency and two-time National Gold Medal Finalist includes 44 parks, a community center, indoor aquatic center and outdoor water park, a 9-hole golf course and an 18-hole golf course, event and reception facility, ski hill, athletic field complex, nature center, gymnasium, and more.

Job Summary:

The Bartlett Nature Center Office Staff / Program Instructor are responsible for providing exceptional customer service while supporting the daily operations of Bartlett Nature Center. Responsibilities include front office operations, participant registrations, facility rentals, special events, recordkeeping & interpretive displays. This position is a supportive role that also presents educational programs for all ages, and supports camps, field trips, birthday parties, and community events. As a representative of the Bartlett Nature Center, employee is expected to provide engaging educational experiences while maintaining a welcoming, professional, and positive environment for all visitors. This is an at-will position. Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • Welcome visitors and operate the Bartlett Nature Center front desk by providing outstanding customer service in person, by telephone, and/or through email.
  • Answer questions, provide accurate information regarding programs, rentals, and Bartlett Nature Center activities, and be able to process registrations and payments.
  • Follow Park District cash handling procedures and assist with facility opening and closing.
  • Attend Districtwide part-time staff orientations, crisis trainings, and staff trainings as directed.
  • Teach environmental education programs for preschool through adult age audiences both on-site and off-site including school field trips, scouts, family and general programs, birthday parties, camps, and special events.
  • Coordinate room rentals by communicating with renters, confirming reservations, and assisting with event logistics.
  • Develop curriculum, lesson plans, hands-on crafts, STEM activities, games, and interpretive experiences.
  • Prepare classrooms and program areas, maintain inventories, order and organize educational materials and supplies, safely handle and care for educational animals, and ensure all teaching resources are prepared for successful program delivery.
  • Register participants, process payments, issue receipts, and maintain participant records using District software.
  • Maintain office files, attendance records, program documentation, calendars, spreadsheets, inventories, scheduling information, and assist with brochure preparation by collecting, editing, and submitting program information according to established deadlines.
  • Assist with the development of bulletin boards, exhibits, interpretive displays, signage, promotional materials, and social media content.
  • Assist with sponsorship requests, donations, and grant support activities as assigned.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a thorough knowledge of Bartlett Nature Center, its programs, facilities, services, and promotions.
  • Maintain clean, organized classrooms, exhibit areas, office spaces, buildings, and grounds while demonstrating ownership and pride in District facilities.
  • Observe and follow all Park District safety policies and regulations. The safety of staff and participants is a continuing responsibility of all District team members.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures and see that they are always adhered to.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High school or equivalent with general office work experience or associate’s degree in education, Parks & Recreation, Natural Resources, or a related field. A minimum of two (2) years of recreation programming, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess strong organizational, communication, customer service, and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn registration software. Must be dependable, professional, and able to work independently and collaboratively. CPR/AED certification is a plus. Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License and have a reliable mode of transportation.

Hours & Pay:

Schedule varies and is usually four (4), 4-hour days, including Saturdays. Flexibility to adjust hours and days, including evenings, weekends, and special events based on the needs of the Bartlett Nature Center.  Anticipated hiring range is $15.00 - $16.50/hour, DOQ.
