What is a part time general counsel?

Part time general counsels are experienced legal professionals who provide legal advice and services to organizations on a part-time basis, rather than being employed full-time. They typically assist with contract review, compliance, risk management, and other legal matters, allowing companies—especially small to mid-sized businesses—to access legal expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. Part time general counsels may work remotely or on-site, and their flexible arrangements help organizations manage complex legal needs efficiently and cost-effectively.

How does a part time general counsel typically collaborate with executive leadership and external legal teams?

A part-time General Counsel often works closely with the executive team to provide strategic legal advice on business initiatives, risk management, and compliance. They usually structure their time to prioritize high-impact matters and may coordinate with external law firms or specialized counsel for more complex legal issues. This collaborative approach ensures that the organization receives comprehensive legal support while optimizing resources. Regular communication and clear delegation are key to making this arrangement effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time general counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time General Counsel, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar admission, and broad legal knowledge in areas such as corporate law, contracts, and compliance. Familiarity with legal research databases, document management systems, and contract lifecycle management tools is typically required. Strong judgment, excellent communication, and the ability to prioritize effectively enable you to deliver strategic legal advice while balancing multiple demands. These skills ensure that the organization receives sound legal guidance, manages risk, and maintains compliance without the need for full-time in-house counsel.
