Through life-changing programs, community-based services, and meaningful relationships with peers and caring adults, we help young people develop the confidence, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed.

Position Summary:

BGC Jane and Finch is seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and community-minded Youth Mentors to support and engage children and youth through recreational, educational, and leadership-based programming. Youth Mentors serve as positive role models who foster healthy relationships, encourage personal growth, and contribute to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.

This position offers valuable experience in youth development, recreation, leadership, social services, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Administration & Organizational Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Youth Coordinator and/or Director.
  • Support the daily delivery of BGC Jane and Finch programs in accordance with the organization's core values of Belonging, Respect, Encouragement and Support, Working Together, and Speaking Out.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of program plans and activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding participants, families, staff, and organizational information.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and on time, including:
  • Attendance records
  • Incident reports
  • Safety audits
  • Progress evaluations
  • Timesheets and work-hour submissions
  • Member profile updates through BambooHR or other designated platforms
  • Complete all required organizational training and submit certifications through BambooHR.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with community partners, including but not limited to:
  • Toronto Community Housing (TCHC)
  • Toronto District School Board (TDSB)
  • Community and Neighbourhood Officers
  • School administrators and staff
  • Local community organizations
  • Comply with all health, safety, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions, training opportunities, and performance evaluations.

Youth Mentor Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage participants during program hours, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.
  • Support youth in developing positive social skills, healthy relationships, leadership abilities, and academic engagement.
  • Organize and facilitate recreational and educational activities, including:
  • Sports and physical fitness
  • Arts and crafts
  • Cooking activities
  • Games and team-building exercises
  • Music and creative programming
  • Special events and workshops
  • Encourage active participation and create opportunities for members to build meaningful peer connections.
  • Welcome new participants and help integrate them into programming.
  • Promote teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and positive behaviour among youth participants.
  • Attend community outings, field trips, and special events as required.
  • Monitor participant attendance, engagement, and progress, documenting observations as requested.
  • Assist with the setup, maintenance, and cleanup of program spaces and equipment.
  • Support the implementation of routine cleaning schedules at assigned program locations.
  • Ensure facilities are maintained in a safe and organized manner, including proper signage, equipment storage, and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and youth in recreational, educational, or community settings is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to engage and motivate diverse groups of young people.
  • Demonstrated leadership, responsibility, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of community resources and youth development principles is considered an asset.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Check

Working Conditions

  • Evening work is required.
  • May involve participation in outdoor activities, community events, and field trips.
