What is a Part Time Fortran Programmer?

A Part Time Fortran Programmer is a software developer who specializes in programming using Fortran, an older but still widely-used programming language, particularly in scientific and engineering applications. Working part time means they typically have a flexible or reduced schedule, often working fewer hours than a full-time programmer. Their main responsibilities include writing, maintaining, and optimizing Fortran code for specific projects or organizations. Many part-time Fortran programmers work remotely or on a contract basis, assisting teams with legacy systems or scientific computing tasks. Their expertise is especially valuable in industries like aerospace, research, and finance, where Fortran is still in use.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time Fortran programmers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time Fortran programmers often encounter challenges such as maintaining continuity on long-term codebases and staying up-to-date with legacy systems while balancing limited hours. Effective communication with full-time team members and thorough documentation are key strategies to mitigate these issues. Additionally, leveraging modern development tools and version control systems can help integrate part-time contributions smoothly with the team's workflow. Building strong relationships with colleagues ensures that part-time programmers are informed about project updates and can provide valuable input despite their reduced schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Fortran Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Fortran Programmer, you need strong programming skills in Fortran, a background in computer science or a related field, and experience with legacy code maintenance. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), scientific computing libraries, and possibly high-performance computing environments is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective time management are standout soft skills for this role. These capabilities ensure efficient code maintenance, compatibility with existing systems, and the timely completion of specialized programming tasks.

Job description

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.
The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architecture, policy and strategy, technology development, warfighter capability enablers, systems integration, defense industrial base, and threat reduction to help shape existing and future space missions across the national security space (NSS) enterprise. DSG is unique at Aerospace as it not only directly supports major customers, including the U.S. Space Force, U.S. Space Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and senior leadership at the Pentagon, but also provides a broad range of technical support across the national space enterprise, maintaining vertical responsibilities with customers' portfolios as well as horizontal, matrixed responsibilities across the corporation. Additionally, DSG provides deep technical expertise to the Space Force Space Systems Command (SSC) in the conception, design, acquisition, launch and operations of satellite, launch vehicle, ground control, and range systems.
Join a team of technical analysts in the International Launch Systems office as a Software Systems Engineer to support missile warning, missile defense and other programs. As part of the team, you will identify and solve hard software problems in tools that impact current and future customer missions. You will work closely with technical analysts to understand customer needs and work independently to develop software solutions.
The selected candidate will be required to work part-time (up to an average of 20 hours per week), on-site at our facility in El Segundo, California. This is a part-time casual position with limited hours.
