JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The SAFE-T Center has ongoing process of hiring and training a diverse and comprehensive group of Standardized Patients (SPs). SPs are integral to medical-forensic education for Forensic Nurses to learn, develop and practice important trauma-informed communications skills and the art of the medical-forensic interview. Nurses also practice their physical and forensic exam skills to gain confidence prior to working with actual patients/victims. The SPs are carefully recruited and trained to take on the characteristics of real patients and to portray a specific case(s). Forensic Nurses will do a medical interview and/or a focused physical examination, and have the opportunity to learn and to be evaluated in a simulated clinical environment.
The word "standardized" means that the standardized patient repeats their story in a consistent manner to numerous training nurses. SP's are carefully recruited and trained to take on the characteristics of a real patient thereby affording the Forensic Nurses an opportunity to learn and to be evaluated on learned skills in a simulated clinical environment.
Each simulation is designed to be as realistic as possible to enhance the learning experience. There are various types of SPs in which you can play a significant role in helping shape the Forensic Nurses.
Job Duties
  • Act as a victim of a violence in encounters with Forensic Nurses and respond with programmed responses according to the questions asked.
  • Portray a particular case or patient presentation accurately and consistently.
  • Represent patient viewpoint and provide individualized feedback to nurses on clinical, interpersonal skills, and professionalism in a constructive manner.
  • Must be reliable, punctual and dependable.
  • Be able to memorize case materials.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to provide feedback to students.
  • Professional demeanor.
  • The ability to participate in student exam by getting on/off a standard exam table, performing range of motion with your arms, legs and hips and putting on and tying a patient gown with or without accommodation.
  • Placing legs in gynecological stirrups for an extended period of time with or without accommodation.
  • Normal range of vision, hearing and speech.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Due to the nature of the work, SP's must be comfortable with GYN (genital) examinations and speculum insertions.

This is a per diem, independent contracting opening with the SAFE-T Center; pay is $40/hour.
