About This Role

This part-time role is responsible for the creation, development and coordination of all Blacksburg United Methodist Church (BUMC) communication platforms - including support of the virtual and in-person worship life of Blacksburg UMC's Church St. campus with high-quality audio and video production. This position is an integral part of all ministries of BUMC. A commitment to excellence and collaborative teamwork, as well as good communications skills are necessary.


What You'll Do

Lead Audio-Video Production including:

  • Create video content related to worship (i.e. sermon illustrations, testimonies, message lead-ins, baptism stories, ministry projects, etc.)
  • Manage the technical aspects of the film, including cameras, sound, lighting, design, etc.
  • Manage audio desk and video desk for worship services.
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteer members of the AV Ministry Team.
  • Communicate and collaborate with Director of Music and Worship Arts around ProPresenter (projection), worship plans, and other AV needs for worship.
  • Perform the above duties in support of special services, including weddings and funerals.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Coordinate Communications including:

  • Lead and oversee overall Church St. communication activities including all printed and electronic materials.
  • Act as the hub for the coordination and collection of all Church St. communications.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain all electronic communications, including campus-wide emails, reports, press releases, social media posts, and announcement slides. Regularly update the BUMC website and information on the BUMC app.
  • Coordinate with the Church Office Manager to ensure accurate hallway announcement slides and bulletin announcements are included each week - including the weekly connections points.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Music and Worship Arts to ensure accurate worship announcement slides are used each week - including the weekly connection points.
  • Develop graphics for all electronic media.
  • Understand the context in which finished work will be used to create more effective final products.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to determine best avenues for communication of upcoming announcements and events.
  • Oversee and participate in the development of the annual report to the congregation.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Represent Blacksburg UMC

  • Understand and perform duties of this position in keeping with the mission and values of the congregation.
  • Present a professional, calm, and welcoming presence.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and communicate with the pastoral staff is there is any question about whether a matter is confidential or not.

  • Demonstrate strong organizational, leadership, and management skills.
  • Demonstrate an ability to make sound decisions and take independent action.
  • Demonstrate skill in the use of office equipment, computers, and related software including Microsoft 365 Suite, Indesign, Illustrator, and Google Docs, ProPresenter, OBS Studio, and Adobe Creative Suite, or capacity to learn.
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage and utilize social networking platforms and electronic communications technologies (website, etc.) to effectively communicate.
  • Bring a background in business administration, nonprofit management, communications, marketing, technology, or a related field, with a combination of education, professional experience, and demonstrated success that has prepared them to excel in this role.
