Job Summary: The Fitness instructor supports the mission of wellness by ensuring quality equipment is in place and facilitates an enthusiastic staff complement a range of health and fitness programs and activities. Responsible for planning, organizing, and leading wellness, health, and fitness programs, in a safe manner while developing and monitoring budgets for these programs. 

Responsibilities/Requirements: 

  • Ensures that cardiovascular and strength training equipment is appropriate to the population served and maintained in accordance with manufacturer specifications; coordinates repair (as needed) and regular preventive maintenance of all exercise equipment. 

  • Evaluate individuals’ abilities, needs and physical conditions and develop suitable programs to meet any special requirements. 

  • Instruct in the appropriate workout methods; explain proper techniques, demonstrate exercises, and teach and demonstrate appropriate use of training equipment. 

  • Observe participants and inform them of any necessary corrective measures for skill improvement. 

  • Monitor participants’ progress and adapt programs as indicated. 

  • Teach scheduled classes beginning and ending on time providing adequate warm-up exercises, stretching and “cool” down as well as proper breathing techniques. 

  • Prepare appropriate equipment, music, and other materials for each class in a healthy and safe environment. 

  • Assist participants during exercises, answer questions and ensure a positive exercise experience for all class participants. 

  • Plan educational programs to promote development of participant’s physical attributes and social skills. 

  • Keep supervisors informed of any customer or department needs and refer participants to interdisciplinary teams, PT, OT, SLP for additional benefits. 

  • Administer emergency first aid and refer to physician as indicated. 

  • Other duties as assigned.   

Education and Licensure: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. 

  • Group Exercise Certification is required from an accredited organization.
