What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time financial planner?

To thrive as a Part Time Financial Planner, you generally need strong analytical skills, in-depth financial knowledge, and a relevant degree or certification such as CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Familiarity with financial planning software, spreadsheets, and portfolio management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, client relationship management, and ethical judgment are soft skills that set outstanding professionals apart. These abilities are crucial for providing sound financial advice, building trust with clients, and ensuring effective, compliant financial planning on a flexible schedule.

What is part time financial planning?

Part time financial planning refers to providing financial advice, strategy, or management services on a part-time basis, either as an employee or independent consultant. These professionals help clients assess their financial goals, create budgets, plan investments, and prepare for retirement, but do so while working fewer hours than a traditional full-time financial planner. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the planner and their clients, making it ideal for those balancing other commitments or seeking work-life balance. The core responsibilities remain the same as full-time roles, but the workload and number of clients are typically reduced.

How does working part time in financial planning typically impact collaboration with clients and team members?

In a part time financial planning role, effective communication and time management are key since you may have limited hours to interact with clients and coordinate with colleagues. Many firms use flexible scheduling and digital tools to facilitate seamless collaboration, ensuring part time planners can stay updated on client portfolios and team projects. You may be responsible for managing a smaller client load or focusing on specific aspects of the planning process, allowing you to provide personalized service within your available hours. Clear expectations and proactive communication with both clients and team members are essential to ensure smooth workflows and maintain strong client relationships.

  • Review and validate revenue assumptions related to government contracts, grants, Medi-Cal, and CalAIM-funded programs.

  • Develop staffing, compensation, and position-control models.

  • Consolidate departmental and program budgets into an organization-wide operating budget.

  • Analyze budget assumptions and identify inconsistencies, financial risks, and opportunities.

  • Support budget review meetings with department and program leaders.

  • Demonstrated experience leading annual budgeting processes for organizations with budgets of $25 million or more.

  • Prior experience in FP&A, budget management, financial planning, or similar roles with significant budget ownership.

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and operational finance.

Advanced to expert-level Excel skills required, including:

  • Budget consolidations across multiple departments.

  • Large dataset management.

  • Must be highly proficient in Excel and comfortable building budgeting and forecasting models from the ground up.

  • Experience within nonprofit healthcare, behavioral health, homelessness services, supportive housing, human services, or other mission-driven organizations strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with California healthcare funding models strongly preferred, including Medi-Cal, CalAIM, managed care reimbursement, government contracts, grants, and restricted funding.

  • Experience with NetSuite and other ERP or budgeting systems preferred.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder partnership skills.
