Position: Historian

Department: Library

Supervisor: Library Director

Employment Type: Part-time


Morgan County is looking for a historian who is passionate about Morgan County and helping others learn more about it. This person must be comfortable talking with others and assisting them in occasional research. This position must be able to do basic addition for budgeting purposes, have the ability to be organized with documents, both digital and physical copies, and be able to learn and understand standards and expectations of the County.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Historian supports the preservation, organization, and research of historical materials related to Morgan County. This position assists with gathering, maintaining, and digitizing historical documents, photographs, artifacts, and local history records. The Historian provides basic research assistance to staff and the public, supports the development of historical displays, and assists with budget needs related to historical collections. Work is performed in accordance with Library policies, preservation standards, and public service expectations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with collecting, organizing, maintaining, and preserving historical materials, documents, photographs, and artifacts related to Morgan County.
  • Catalogs, labels, and files archival items using approved organization and storage methods.
  • Conducts basic historical research for staff, public inquiries, and internal Library projects.
  • Assists Library staff in preparing historical displays, exhibits, and informational materials.
  • Helps maintain digital and physical archives, including scanning and electronically organizing documents.
  • Ensures proper care and handling of fragile or aging materials.
  • Assists the Library Director with basic budgeting tasks related to historical programs, supplies, and archival needs.
  • Supports Library outreach efforts by providing historical information for community events, newsletters, or educational programs
  • Works collaboratively with the Historical Society Board, providing reports on Historical Society operations, programs, and community needs.
  • Operates and manages the depot gift shop, including purchasing merchandise, maintaining inventory, processing and reconciling sales, and depositing revenues according to county financial policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • Experience or interest in local history, museums, libraries, archival work, or recordkeeping preferred.
  • Training will be provided by the Library as needed.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of:

  • Basic historical research methods (or willingness to learn).
  • Principles of organizing documents, photographs, and archival materials.
  • Local or regional history (or willingness to learn).

Ability to:

  • Maintain records, organize materials, and follow preservation procedures.
  • Learn archival standards and follow directions for handling materials.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and staff.
  • Assist with budget tracking or purchasing needs under direction of the Library Director.
  • Work independently and manage parttime responsibilities reliably.
  • Answer patron inquiries respectfully and professionally.
