What is a part time federal government job?

A Part Time Federal Government job is a position within a federal agency that requires fewer hours than a full-time role, typically less than 40 hours per week. These positions may offer flexible schedules and are available in various fields, including administration, law enforcement, and healthcare. While part-time employees may receive some benefits, such as prorated leave and federal retirement contributions, they may not be eligible for full benefits like health insurance. Part-time federal jobs can be competitive and often require U.S. citizenship, background checks, and specific qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a part time federal government position?

To succeed in a part time federal government role, candidates generally need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with government record-keeping systems, office software such as Microsoft Office Suite, and, for some roles, security clearance, is frequently required. Strong communication, reliability, and adaptability help individuals work effectively within structured teams and diverse workplace cultures. These skills ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance in fulfilling vital government functions on a part-time basis.

What should I expect in terms of work schedule and flexibility in a part time federal government position?

Part time federal government jobs typically offer set weekly hours, ranging between 16 to 32 per week, often with a consistent schedule; however, some positions may provide limited flexibility depending on agency needs and the specific role. You may work mornings, afternoons, or specific days of the week, and requests for schedule adjustments or remote work are handled according to government policies. While deadlines, teamwork, and protocol adherence remain important, part time staff often experience a supportive environment with clearly defined duties. This structure can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance, supplemental income, or a gradual introduction to federal service.

Can I work part-time for the federal government?

Yes, the federal government offers part-time positions in various agencies, often requiring specific qualifications and security clearances. These roles may have flexible schedules and are available in fields such as administrative support, cybersecurity, and research. Applicants should review job announcements for eligibility and application procedures.

Job description

Description:

Manages the day-to-day execution of a federal information technology modernization project involving document processing, structured data extraction, workflow automation, artificial intelligence, enterprise search, testing, deployment, and transition. The manager maintains the project schedule, milestones, dependencies, risks, issues, action items, decisions, deliverables, and acceptance activities while coordinating work across technical, security, quality assurance, accessibility, records-management, and training personnel. The position also serves as the primary management contact for Government stakeholders and ensures that project communications, priorities, and required actions remain clear and current.

Plans and facilitates kickoff meetings, recurring project reviews, technical working sessions, deliverable reviews, and other coordination activities needed to keep the project on schedule. The manager prepares recurring status reports that summarize accomplishments, upcoming work, schedule performance, risks, issues, decisions, quality concerns, and Government dependencies. The position monitors progress against the approved scope, schedule, security requirements, and Firm-Fixed-Price commitments and escalates concerns requiring corrective action or management attention.

Coordinates the development, internal review, submission, comment resolution, and acceptance of required deliverables. The manager also supports requirements traceability, user acceptance testing, training, production deployment, knowledge transfer, transition, and project closeout. The pricing build-up should allocate part-time support throughout the period of performance, with increased effort during mobilization, major deliverable reviews, testing, deployment, training, and closeout.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the contractor’s primary management point of contact and coordinate communications with Government stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain the project schedule, milestones, dependencies, action items, risks, issues, and decision logs.
  • Plan and facilitate kickoff meetings, recurring project reviews, technical working sessions, and deliverable reviews.
  • Monitor project performance against scope, schedule, quality, security, and acceptance requirements.
  • Prepare recurring status reports summarizing accomplishments, planned activities, schedule status, risks, issues, decisions, and required Government actions.
  • Coordinate activities across document processing, data extraction, enterprise search, platform integration, security, testing, accessibility, training, deployment, and transition.
  • Manage the development, internal review, submission, comment resolution, and acceptance of required deliverables.
  • Coordinate user acceptance testing, training, production deployment, knowledge transfer, and project closeout.
  • Identify and escalate potential scope, schedule, technical, security, or performance concerns and support corrective-action planning.
  • Maintain traceability among project requirements, technical activities, test results, and deliverables.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, project management, information technology, or a related discipline.
  • At least five years of experience managing information technology, data, cloud, document-management, or modernization projects.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams and working with Government or regulated-sector stakeholders.
  • Experience managing project schedules, risks, issues, status reports, deliverables, and acceptance activities.
  • Experience supporting projects with defined milestones and deliverable-based performance requirements.
  • Strong written, oral, organizational, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Must be a US Citizen and ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust

Preferred

  • Project Management Professional certification or comparable project-management credential.
  • Experience managing Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Azure, artificial intelligence, document-processing, or enterprise-search projects.
  • Experience supporting Federal Government customers or Firm-Fixed-Price task orders.
