Description:

Job Summary: Provides nursing care to patients within the guidelines set by Boston Eye Surgery & Laser Center. Assists and circulates on surgical procedures. Provides assistance in training, orienting, and education of OR personnel (Licensed Practical Nurses, Scrub Technicians, and Instrument Technicians). Assists in administrative and related duties as directed by the Clinical Director and or Charge Nurse. Provides and maintains a safe and aseptic environment in the operating room. Assumes the charge role position in the absence of the Clinical Director and or Charge Nurse.


Duties:

I. Supervises and directs patient care:

  1. Insures care of patient through proper identification, checking of chart and surgical procedure, and reporting changes of a patientโ€™s condition to Surgeon, Anesthesia, and the Charge Nurse.
  2. Provides assistance to surgeon and anesthesia personnel as needed.
  3. Assists surgeon and/or anesthesia personnel in the administration of pre-op medications, local anesthesia and topical anesthesia.
  4. Keeps OR Charge Nurse informed of operational status of OR.
  5. Supervises OR personnel and assists as needed.
  6. Assures that proper technique and practices are used.
  7. Uses EPIC appropriately and complies with all HIPPA regulations.


II. Performs First Assisting duties as needed:

  1. Remains proficient and knowledgeable regarding surgeonโ€™s technique, equipment, and requirements.
  2. Assists surgeon as scrub:
  3. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves in accordance with proper sterile technique.
  4. Sets up table, instruments, and supplies according to type of surgical care.
  5. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative area.
  6. Assists and anticipates needs of surgeon.
  7. Maintains aseptic technique at all times.
  8. Assists and maintenance and care of specimens.
  9. Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies, and cleans room in accordance with center protocols.


III. Performs all Circulating duties:

  1. Transport patients to the OR and prepares the patient for surgery.
  2. Prepares operative area as directed by the policies and procedures that Boston Eye Surgery & Laser Center Adheres to.
  3. Assists surgeon, anesthesia personnel, and other personnel as needed to assure quality patient care.
  4. Prepares the operating room with all necessary supplies and equipment and provides for the team as needed.
  5. Supervises and assists scrub technician as needed.
  6. Prepares and submits specimens and cultures.
  7. Coordinates the schedule to ensure that the patients are blocked and in the operating room ready for surgery within the timeframe set by the schedule.
  8. Aids in transporting the patient to recovery and reports the course of the surgical procedure and patient status to the recovery room nurse.


IV. Assists in administrative duties as directed by the OR Charge Nurse.

  1. Assists with inventory as needed.
  2. Orders supplies in a timely manner
  3. Reports any equipment or supply problem as soon as possible.
  4. Accepts the committee assignments when assigned by the Clinical Director.


V. Assists in supervision of personnel and oversees the compliance of the operating room staff assuring a safe environment.

  1. Assures a clean and safe environment.
  2. Checks rooms, supplies, and equipment for proper care and handling.
  3. Assists in control of traffic and personnel to insure adherence to proper infection control standards.
  4. Supervises the sterile processing of instruments and other supplies.


VI. Performs additional duties as directed by the Clinical Director and or Charge Nurse.


Job Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Massachusetts.


Physical Demands:

  1. Frequent tasks: Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, handling, reaching and twisting of weights ranging from light to heavy at heights ranging from the foot to above the head.
  2. Mobility: Walking up to 8-10 hours, standing 3-8 hours, stooping, bending, balancing, climbing, crouching, and sitting.


Requirements:

Monday-Thursday Varied Days (two 10-hour shifts)

No Weekend
