Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and/or Chief Technologist, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs a wide variety of technical and professional duties utilizing complex imaging equipment to produce high-quality ultrasound images for radiologist interpretation.
All responsibilities are performed in accordance with departmental and organizational policies, procedures, and service excellence standards. To meet departmental staffing needs, Diagnostic Radiology staff may be assigned to any YNHHS Diagnostic Radiology location regardless of primary work assignment.
Responsibilities
Ultrasound Imaging & Quality
  • Perform high-quality, efficient ultrasound examinations to support accurate patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Follow established imaging protocols and physician-specific instructions.
  • Consistently produce diagnostic-quality images with minimal repeat examinations.

Patient Care & Service Excellence
  • Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care that promotes safety, comfort, and satisfaction.
  • Accurately identify patients and verify examinations according to departmental policy.
  • Educate patients regarding procedures and address questions or concerns before imaging begins.

Documentation & Operational Excellence
  • Complete required documentation and record-keeping accurately and efficiently.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with RIS/PACS and related applications, including:
    • Imagecast
    • VIP
    • Synapse
    • Syngo Dynamics
    • Event Reporting
  • Perform exam scheduling, exam completion, document scanning, and other system-related tasks independently.

Professional Development & Education
  • Participate in ongoing educational opportunities to expand clinical knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Assist with mentoring, teaching, and training activities as appropriate.
  • Pursue professional growth through certifications, continuing education, seminars, advanced degrees, and professional memberships.

Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all department and organizational safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate equipment safely and effectively.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics and patient lifting devices when appropriate to minimize risk of injury to patients and staff.

Patient Experience
  • Support department goals related to patient satisfaction and service excellence.
  • Consistently:
    • Introduce yourself and explain your role.
    • Encourage a patient- and family-centered care experience.
    • Clearly explain procedures.
    • Address patient comfort concerns.
    • Thank patients and answer any remaining questions following exams.
  • Contribute to achieving departmental Press Ganey patient satisfaction goals.

Qualifications
Education
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Associate's degree preferred and graduate of an accredited (CAAHEP) School of Diagnostic Sonography; OR
  • Associate's degree and graduate of an accredited Allied Health program with an additional 12 months of full-time Diagnostic Medical Sonography instruction; OR
  • Bachelor's degree with an additional 12 months of full-time Diagnostic Medical Sonography instruction.

Experience
  • Demonstrated technical skills consistent with entry-level standards of routine sonography practice.

Licensure & Certifications
  • ARDMS certification to include Abdomen (AB) certification required within six (6) months of hire; OR
  • ARRT Sonography certification is also accepted upon hire; however, RDMS Abdomen (AB) certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire date.

Additional certification requirements:
  • Vascular certification within twelve (12) months of hire
  • OB/GYN certification within eighteen (18) months of hire
  • CPR certification preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and assist with patient transfers.
  • Ability to push up to 40 pounds, including portable ultrasound equipment.
