What is part time engineering?

Part time engineering refers to engineering positions that require fewer working hours than a standard full-time job, typically offering flexible schedules. These roles may be ideal for students, parents, retirees, or those seeking additional work-life balance. Part-time engineers perform many of the same duties as full-time engineers, such as designing, analyzing, or maintaining systems, but on a reduced schedule. This arrangement can be found in various engineering fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in your specific discipline. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE are typically beneficial. Strong time management, communication, and teamwork skills help you efficiently balance project demands and collaborate effectively in limited working hours. These competencies ensure you can contribute meaningful results and maintain productivity within a flexible or reduced schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part time engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time engineers often face challenges such as balancing multiple responsibilities, staying updated with project changes, and maintaining effective communication with full-time team members. To address these issues, it's important to establish clear expectations with supervisors, use collaborative tools for project tracking, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with the team. Adopting these practices can help part-time engineers stay engaged and ensure their contributions align with overall project goals.

  • Leverage existing industry networks to set up introductory meetings, technical briefings, and software demonstrations with key decision-makers.
  • Expand Triton's footprint across defense, aerospace, and commercial simulation markets.
  • Build and maintain a qualified pipeline of government program offices, prime contractors, and commercial enterprise clients.

Client Engagement and Capture Support

  • Facilitate software transition opportunities into DoD programs of record, government research facilities, and commercial engineering teams.
  • Support proposal efforts, customer presentations, and partnership negotiations.
  • Coordinate closely with the Applied Computational Engineering team to align customer requirements with technical milestones.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance if required.
  • Demonstrated success in technical business development, software sales, or product transition within engineering software or computational technologies.
  • Established, active professional network within the defense, aerospace, and government R&D ecosystems.
  • Proven experience transitioning advanced software technologies to government clients and prime contractors.
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to operate independently as a self-starter in a flexible, part-time consulting capacity.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and applied computational engineering applications.
  • Familiarity with DoD software acquisition pathways, SBIR/STTR Phase III transitions, and government contracting vehicles.
  • Prior experience commercializing dual-use software products.

Engagement Details and Education

  • Engagement Type: Part-time consultancy, hourly compensation commensurate with experience.
