Job Title: Math and Science Tutor - Part-Time
Location: Ivy Tech Community College - Downtown Indianapolis Campus
Job Type: Part-time
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
Schedule: Up to 28 hours/week, including evenings and weekends as needed
Reports to: Math Center Assistant Director

About the Role:
We're seeking a motivated and skilled Part-Time Math Tutor to support students in college-level mathematics and related STEM disciplines. This position involves providing in-person and virtual tutoring in a welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters academic growth. The role includes 1-on-1 tutoring in STEM courses, leading group tutoring sessions, leading review workshops, and assisting departmental leadership with outreach and marketing. An ideal candidate will have experience with STEM education at the high-school and early college level, strong customer service skills and a passion for helping students succeed.

***The position will require physical (on-site) attendance at the Indianapolis (and potentially Plainfield) campus.***

Required Skills & Competencies:
1. Subject Matter Expertise

  • Proficiency in math subjects from pre-algebra to college-level trigonometry
  • Additional knowledge in calculus, physical sciences, accounting, engineering, or IT support is a plus

2. Tutoring & Instruction

  • Ability to quickly identify key student concerns and prioritize subject issues
  • Ability to guide students through complex concepts with patience and clarity
  • Willingness to dig beneath surface-level questions to address root challenges

3. Communication

  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with a diverse student population
  • Capable of maintaining a professional and supportive tone as well as a positive, growth-oriented mindset in all settings

4. Learning Environment Management

  • Maintain an inclusive, clean, and student-friendly environment
  • Adapt quickly in a dynamic lab setting, serving multiple students efficiently
  • Promote respect and collaboration among students
  • Ability to work cohesively and dynamically with a team of tutors

5. Technology Proficiency

  • Comfortable using Windows PCs, MacBooks, and Chromebooks
  • Familiar with learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard), Microsoft and Google Suites, Zoom, email, and chat tools
  • Experience with virtual instruction tools (Zoom, screen sharing, writing tablet usage) preferred

6. Organizational & Reporting Skills

  • Accurately track tutoring sessions for outcome reporting
  • Adhere to academic and privacy standards, including FERPA compliance

Key Responsibilities:
The following is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties logically associated with this position may be assigned. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

  • Use established Math Center pedagogy and protocols to tutor students one-on-one in math courses and math-related courses. Thoroughly document tutoring data.
  • Sustain high quality customer service while facilitating back-to-back tutoring sessions
  • Apply advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve student questions and inquiries.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams-including faculty-utilizing transparent and empathetic communication to help elevate departmental services and contribute to team initiatives.
  • Assist departmental leadership with marketing and outreach, including conducting class visits, tabling events, and leading relevant workshops for students. Assist with monitoring department's email communications to help schedule tutoring appointments for students.
  • Assist departmental leadership with analyzing departmental data to identify trends and make actionable recommendations for service growth and development.
  • Maintain an understanding of pedagogical trends and apply relevant skills in support of student success.

Education & Experience:

Qualifications -

  • Strong background in Math, Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience at secondary or post-secondary levels preferred
