Job Summary
Provides technical support and oversight in an academic shop environment, assisting faculty, staff, and students across multiple disciplines. Maintains and operates specialized equipment, manages inventory, coordinates training, and oversees repairs with vendors. Applies strong problem-solving, communication, and writing skills while working collaboratively with diverse groups. Requires proficiency with CorelDRAW, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and a wide range of woodworking and fabrication equipment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Lab Maintenance and Safety (40%)
  • Assist faculty in supervision of students during lab activities as directed
  • Ensure student safety is prioritized; monitor and correct improper tool use
  • Organize and ensure proper use of all safety equipment
  • Sanitize and maintain safety glasses and respirators
  • Ensure labs are clean, accessible, and prepared prior to scheduled coursework (lighting, equipment readiness, access)
  • Monitor student activity to prevent equipment damage, tool wear, and unsafe practices
  • Perform preventative maintenance on lab environments (filters, floor coverings, spray booths, air systems)
  • Monitor gauges and air systems to ensure proper suction and temperature levels
  • Support instruction by assisting students with software (CorelDraw/AutoCAD) and equipment use (CNC, laser engraver)
Equipment and Inventory (40%)
  • Tune, calibrate, and adjust all lab equipment including CNC router, laser engraver, edge bander, band saws, sanders, and specialty machines
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance to ensure equipment functionality and safety
  • Replace worn or damaged parts, cutters, bits, and blades
  • Evaluate and repair damaged equipment or coordinate proper disposal
  • Maintain a secure tool room and inventory control system for tools, materials, and supplies
  • Track usage and maintain appropriate inventory levels of consumables
  • Maintain updated pricing lists for wood, hardware, and related materials
  • Provide inventory and tool usage reports to department leadership
  • Coordinate installation of new equipment, including layout, electrical, pneumatic, and dust collection systems
  • Schedule and oversee tool room coverage by part-time staff and student employees
Outreach & HazMat (15%)
  • Research, design, and manufacture outreach and promotional items (including SLCC-branded products)
  • Assist students, staff, and faculty with design and project development for outreach efforts
  • Monitor, maintain, and ensure proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with regulations
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Minimum qualifications
AAS or AS degree in Construction or actively pursuing degree in Construction and experience in Woodworking, Furniture Making, Cabinets or Construction Management. Zero (0) to Three (3) years of full-time work experience in Construction, Construction Management, Cabinet Making, Woodworking, Furniture Making or related maintenance field.

Equivalent combo of education & experience
Preferred Qualifications
4 years or more of experience.
