POSITION SPECIFICS
The Hermann Lab at Penn State University is seeking a part-time Arthropod Ecology and Trophic Interactions Research Support member. This position will involve working with various insect pest and predators, assisting faculty, staff, and graduate students with research plant care, observations, experiments, and assays, and collecting and interpreting data in greenhouse, laboratory, or field settings. No experience is necessary, but a passionate personality and inquisitive nature are helpful.
Job duties to include:
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of research plants and experimental setups

  • Conduct observations and experiments looking at predator prey interactions

  • Assist with laboratory assays and data collection

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and graduate students on research projects

  • Maintain accurate records of experimental data and assist with data interpretation

  • Help maintain a clean and organized work environment in the greenhouse, laboratory, and field settings

Requirements, qualifications, and/or competencies:
  • Candidates must be enthusiastic and self-motivated

  • Willing to work flexible hours

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Willingness and ability to work in extreme conditions in greenhouse, laboratory, and field settings

  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow experimental protocols

  • This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Location and Commitments
  • The work will be at the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building on the University Park campus, at Rock Springs Agricultural station and at various backyards in Centre County

  • Part time

  • Specific working times are flexible and will be discussed and set at the beginning of the field season

  • Most work will be restricted to weekdays and normal working hours but there may be occasional data collection events that require weekends or odd hours

Duration of Appointment
  • Semester positions: Fall: Late August to mid December; Spring: mid January to early May
  • Summer positions: Late May/Early June to mid/late August

Compensation:
The starting rate for this job is $15/hour.
