You might also be responsible for running simulations, preparing documentation, and assisting in resolving technical issues as they arise. The role often involves working independently as well as interacting with team members from various departments to ensure that project deliverables are met on time. This structure offers flexibility, but also requires strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks effectively within a reduced work schedule.

Is it possible to work part-time as an engineer?

Part-time work as a design engineer is possible and often depends on the employer’s needs and project requirements. Many companies offer flexible schedules or part-time roles, especially for freelance or consulting engineers, but full-time positions are more common in engineering firms. Skills in CAD software and engineering principles are essential regardless of work hours.

What is a Part Time Design Engineer job?

A Part Time Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving products or systems while working on a reduced-hour schedule. They typically perform tasks such as drafting, prototyping, and testing while collaborating with teams on a flexible or project-based basis. These competencies enable high-quality design work within limited schedules, ensuring that technical solutions meet project goals and industry standards.

Is 40 too late to be an engineer?

Part time design engineers can start at any age, including 40 or older, as engineering skills such as CAD software, problem-solving, and technical knowledge are learnable at any stage. Many professionals transition into engineering careers later in life through certifications, online courses, and experience, making age less of a barrier than skill development and dedication.

Are design engineers in demand?

Design engineers are in demand across various industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace, especially those skilled in CAD software and innovative problem-solving. The role often requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and familiarity with industry-specific tools, with employment prospects influenced by technological advancements and industry growth trends.

Job description

Manufacturing Process Engineers play a critical role in how products are produced safely, efficiently, and at scale in a manufacturing environment. In this role, you will work cross‑functionally to strengthen processes and build capability while driving results across safety, quality, service, cost, and sustainability. You will spend meaningful time on the production floor partnering with Operations and Maintenance teams to solve real manufacturing challenges. This position is based on‑site at a large‑scale manufacturing facility in Kansas City, Kansas.

You will join a team focused on operational excellence, continuous improvement, and consistent daily performance. The work is hands‑on and highly impactful, including safety improvements, new product introductions from a process perspective, cost savings initiatives, and yield and loss reduction. You will collaborate closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Continuous Improvement teams across production shifts. This role is focused on delivering results through strong manufacturing execution, disciplined processes, and flexibility to support key operational needs.

A Taste of What You’ll Be Doing

  • Optimize Manufacturing Processes – Lead improvements to active production processes by analyzing performance, reducing losses, improving flow, and implementing efficiency‑driven solutions directly on the manufacturing floor.
  • Drive Manufacturing Performance and Standards – Own and support manufacturing performance measures by developing, implementing, and sustaining standard work and process controls across production lines and shifts.
  • Lead Continuous Improvement – Apply structured continuous improvement and root cause problem‑solving methods to address safety, quality, and productivity issues in partnership with operations and maintenance teams.
  • Provide Hands‑On Technical Support – Serve as a technical resource for manufacturing equipment, process settings, raw materials, packaging, and finished goods while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, food safety, and good manufacturing practice requirements.
  • New Product Launches – Lead projects related to process optimization, cost savings, packaging improvements, mix and bake efficiency improvements, and new product launches from a packaging and process perspective.
  • Material and Process Delivery – Execute work according to standard operating procedures, establish critical quality requirements, reduce process variability across the line, address performance variances, improve yield, operate to equipment design rates, and deliver cost‑saving targets.

We’re Looking for Someone With

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or a high school diploma or general education diploma.
  • Demonstrated experience driving process improvement initiatives within a manufacturing environment, including efforts such as yield improvement, waste reduction, or line optimization.
  • Hands-on experience supporting production processes, manufacturing equipment, and operators on the plant floor.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing safety, quality, and good manufacturing practice requirements.
  • Experience using structured continuous improvement and problem-solving tools in a manufacturing setting.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Microsoft Excel for data analysis, along with tools such as Minitab.
  • Flexibility to work across multiple shifts as needed to support product launches, training, and critical operational activities

Compensation

The annual salary range is $107,800 - $141,540, which is based on various factors such as location, experience and skill. Discretionary bonuses based on company and individual performance are also available.
