What Does a Part Time Data Scientist Do?

A part-time data scientist’s skills and responsibilities are very similar to those of a data analyst. Like a data analyst, you have to collect and review company or industry data and then perform an analysis based on a business question the company wants to answer. You share this information with other parts of the enterprise. Where data scientists’ duties are different is that you use past data to build machine learning models. These machine learning models make predictions, and the goal is to identify trends that lead to a more thorough understanding of the business and its customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and experience with data modeling, typically supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with tools like Python, R, SQL, and data visualization platforms, as well as knowledge of machine learning libraries, is often required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you effectively deliver insights and collaborate despite reduced hours. These skills ensure you can provide high-impact, actionable analyses efficiently within a limited work schedule.

How does working part-time as a data scientist typically impact project involvement and collaboration with full-time team members?

As a part-time data scientist, you may be assigned to specific projects or tasks that fit within your available hours, often focusing on defined deliverables or analytical support roles. Collaboration with full-time colleagues is common, usually through regular meetings, shared documentation, and communication tools to ensure alignment. It's important to clearly communicate your schedule and capacity, as timely updates and hand-offs help maintain project momentum. While you might not be involved in every stage of a project, your specialized contributions are highly valued, and many organizations foster flexible, inclusive environments to integrate part-time professionals effectively.

What is a part time data scientist?

A part time data scientist is a professional who applies statistical analysis, machine learning, and data processing skills to extract insights from data, but works fewer hours than a full-time employee—typically under 35 hours per week. Part time data scientists may work for one or more companies, often on flexible schedules or as contractors. Their responsibilities can include data cleaning, building predictive models, and presenting data-driven insights to help organizations make informed decisions. This role is ideal for those seeking work-life balance, students, or professionals looking to supplement their income.

Data Scientist, Mid
The Opportunity:
The proliferation of technology like IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence means that critical data is often locked away in complex, siloed systems. As a Data Scientist, you know that the real challenge isn't just organizing data, but transforming it into a dynamic, interactive foundation for decision-making. We need a versatile problem-solver like you to help build end-to-end solutions with platforms such as Palantir Foundry, Databricks, and AWS, enabling our clients to tackle missions from fraud detection to cancer research.
As a Data Scientist, you will be a key contributor to the technical solution. This role offers a unique opportunity to grow your skills across data engineering, data science, and front-end development. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, you'll help develop and deploy the data pipelines that organize and make disparate data meaningful. You will collaborate with your team and end-users to understand their requirements, then use that insight to help implement the data ontology, support analyses, and configure user-facing applications and workflows. Your goal is to be a vital part of the team closing the gap between raw data and operational impact.
You will be embedded with clients, working in a fast-paced, agile environment where you take on increasing responsibility for key components of the solution. You'll learn to move fluidly between writing data transformations, exploring data for key insights, and configuring front-end modules to deliver a seamless user experience. You'll quickly develop a strong understanding of the client's mission as you help your team turn their most complex data challenges into intuitive, powerful software solutions.
Work with us as we use data science for good.
Join us. The world can't wait.

  • 2+ years of experience developing and maintaining scalable data stores that supply data in forms needed for business analysis
  • Experience creating solutions within a collaborative, cross-functional team
  • Experience developing scripts and programs for converting various types of data into usable formats, and supporting the project team to scale, monitor, and operate data platforms
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree and 1+ years of experience with data engineering, including application or software development in a professional environment, or 3+ years of experience with data engineering, including application or software development in a professional environment, in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with advanced automation of software delivery, including Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation, containerization such as Docker, and orchestration such as Kubernetes or EKS, aligned to DevSecOps practices
