Pet Adoption Specialist (Part-Time; Non-Exempt)

Department:

Animal Control Police

Job Summary:

The Pet Adoption Specialist supports the City's animal shelter and adoption programs by providing compassionate care for animals and helping connect adoptable animals with appropriate homes or rescue groups. This position assists with animal transfers and adoptions, responds to questions from the public, promotes responsible pet ownership, and provides information regarding available animals, shelter services and adoption requirements. The Pet Adoption Specialist also assists with the daily care and handling of shelter animals, maintains accurate records, and supports adoption events and other community outreach activities. This position requires excellent customer service skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively with animals and people in a sometimes high-stress environment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Police Administrative Sergeant and does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Salary:

$18.07 per hour

Schedule:

  • Availability to work Saturdays is required.
  • Other workdays and hours are flexible, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Position is fully on-site; remote or hybrid work is not available.

Essential Functions:

May include, but not limited to:

  • Works with the Marketing and Communications Specialist to capture and provide photos that promote and increase awareness of animal adoption
  • Cares for and feeds animals at the City's animal shelter
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary shelter environment including grounds, kennel area and cat room/cages and general cleaning tasks
  • Participates in area adoption events, outreach, and educational programs
  • Works with, and builds and maintains relationships with area rescue groups
  • Maintains accurate adoption records
  • Performs other duties as assigned in a positive manner, which supports the vision and strategic objectives of the division/department and the entire organization of the City of Owasso

Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and/or Education:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • Valid OK Driver's License
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to take clear photos and videos of animals to share with Marketing and Communications Specialist
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and Access, with strong data entry skills
  • Strong organization skills
  • Regular attendance and dependable on-time work practices
  • Helpful attitude to provide positive customer service experiences, and cooperative, work team attitude with co-workers
  • Compassion, creativity and a strong work ethic are essential
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work with animals and various cleaning products
  • Successful completion of background investigation and MMPI evaluation

Working Environment and Physical Requirements:

This role involves exposure to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, loud noises, and potentially aggressive or sick animals. The environment can be emotionally and physically demanding. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be used as instructed. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderate to loud when in the kennel.

Specific hearing abilities include ability to hear, hold conversation with others by telephone, in person, and over radio equipment.
